Been shifting through my mothers loft, as shes getting insulation fitted , found the scootering trips to Italy photos , and finally found this one .
I`ll start at the beginning ...........
My dad was a bespoke tailor in Leeds in the 60`s through to late 70`s , around that era not alot of people could afford a " made to measure " suit . So mainly all his clients were the buisness men / money men . ( which came in usefull at times )
Anyway Leeds made it thru to the European cup final in Paris 1975 , tickets were scarce to say the least . My dad used to make suits for a bloke who lived opposite Elland road , and owned a coach company called Fallas coaches ( leeds used to use them for a while ) so he was well in with the club .
My dad wasnt having any of the queing round the ground for tickets , so asked around some of his clients , any way he gets a call from Jack Fallas saying hes got 2 tickets if he wants them . So hes off down quick as to pick them up , trouble is 1 is at 1 side of the ground , 1 at the opposite side ( both are in the Leeds section tho . ) Now hes told my brother that hes got 2 tickets and he can go before he knew this !!
He was telling his mate who owned the local chip shop about his good fortune regarding the tickets and how he was driving from Leeds to Paris , chance has it the bloke who owned the chippy , his daughter was going to europe travelling with her boyfriend for a week away , so my dad said he would give them a lift to Calais .
Off they all set , in some old renault 8 !! , dropped the girl and her boyfiend off and headed to Paris . My brother told me they stopped before Paris as it was late and camped , until early in the morning and he was woken suddenly by my dad , they had only camped in a graveyard ( they have the grave stones layed flat ) so he did `nt see them and thought it was just a field
They finally get to Paris for the game , now bear in mind they have 2 tickets both opposite sides of the ground , and my brother is only 11 at the time . My dad stood near the turnstyle where my brothers ticket was for and was asking people if they were on the same row as his . they eventually found someone on the same row ( a big scottish bloke in leeds shirt and a kilt ) my dad asked if he`d keep an eye on him and he agreed so my dad arranged to meet him outside the ground near the turnstyle !!! imagine doing that nowadays with an 11 year old kid !!!! ( my mother knew nothing about this till after they returned )
The game ...........................well i will just skip that part .............
After the game , all hell was breaking out , riot police baton charging anyone who was english , and my dad was trying to get round to meet our kid . Finally got there and whos stood there .. our kid with this big scottish bloke with his arm round him .
Another character building experience was how my dad described it , as my mother was screaming away at him for leaving him !!
Everytime we went to the chip shop for about 6 months after we would get an extra fish thrown on
AS FOR THE GAME ???? AT LEAST THEY BOTH CAN SAY "WE WERE THERE "
Great story that and so many sign of the times in there of how things have changed. Leaving the lad, everybody helping each other. Human faith. its all in there, cheers man
