"Indie", in the truest sense of the word to me, are those outside of the mainstream guitar bands from the late 70s / early 80s. I'll not be boring and put up a Fall record.....
Blur were mainstream as fuck. They started to get known after their record company told them to do a song called, "there's no other way" and said it NEEDS to have breakbeat drums in it cos' the stone roses do that and they are big. So they copied them and it was a hit... Hmm modern life is rubbish indeed!
Anyway, I always thought the term 'indie' referred to the fact a band were on an independent label?...
I sometimes struggle to believe I used to be into 'indie' in such a big way. I mean Joy Division were a class act as were the likes of the Fall but the modern stuff is near enough unlistenable with one or two mild exceptions.
Yup. It gets on my tits when people call the likes of Kings of Leon, Arctic Monkeys, Killers etc "indie" bands. They are some of the most popular acts around and are thus "pop" acts.

Arctic monkeys are on an indie label though; Domino.
