Love em or hate em they are coming to a street near you weather its offering to tarmac your drive, pitchin up in the field at the back of your house or on the TV i have been following a lot of the programs on the tv about gypsies and i do find there culture quite fascinating. I have had a few run ins with the travellers a few times and it has been fairly positive. There was a Romany family and a another family of gypsies who bought and sold cars on my estate growing up and to be honest i dont think you could of met a nicer bunch of people. One time when i was about 17 me and my friends were out and few gypsies came up to us and just point blank asked us for a fight, we were all a bit stunned but the funny thing was they were matching us up by size and gauging our weight anyway we politely declined and they just walked off. Now if that was a bunch of pissed up meat heads down the pub they would of seen that as a sign of weakness and waded in anyway. And not so long ago where i used to work the travellers just turned up in a field just down the road and i think the resident were having a hard time getting rid. Anyway car stereos and gps's started going missing in the car park and everyone immediately started blaming the travellers. Well the police caught the person doing and it was a local lad who lived just down the road. I am not saying there all angels but i personally have never had a problem with them and i think that if you leave them alone i am damn sure they wont bother you.
Buggers nicked the mot books at a garage i was at years ago and another fella fixed a transit for them, they didnt want to pay so called the inforcer ,i have never seen a fella turn up in a big sel merc and unwrap himself out the drivers seat, he eventually paid half the bill and promised not to come back and burn the place down, long and short there are good and bad in every culture but the gypos get a bad run .
They have very old school values and used to just keep themselves to themselves, tending not to let their culture mix with settled people. Judging by the recent media obsession with them it seems that those values are a thing of the past.
As said there's good and bad in everything but I don't think the Travellers are doing themselves any favours by courting the interest in them.
Not a problem at all, know a few and worked with a few in the past, Used to be a massive community in Hull when lived there. Funnily enough there was a great job a few years back Gypsy/Travellers Liason/Mediation Officer for Sheffield council, Be a good job with unexpected perks if you got it right, Did think about it for a bit. Had one as a client last year who had to leave his community over some disagreement and found him to be a pleasant guy and lots of stories, very loyal folk, his friends where etched full of life. Enjoyed working with him and resettled him back into society, He was very appreciative and thankful for me just doing my job.
site by me , say 2-3 miles away , never had any bother .. keep themselves to themselves most of the time .. Kosovans / Poles we have a problem with ...

Known quite a few over the years, there is a big permanent site where I used to live in Tolworth SW London, one lad we became very friendly with as he was seeing a girl who was one of our circle of friends. He name was Freddie and he was sound as a pound, he had a nephew though who was a thieving little bastard! The older lads used to keep the younger ones in check and would often sort them out if they stepped out of line like the time they knicked the Landlord of our local's Staffie! Freddie found out and it was returned within a day with a few slaps dished out too. Another time I helped the little nephew withdraw some money from a cash point as he couldn't read- twice I helped him to do it- turns out he knicked his dads card and pin number! had the family down to visit me for that one.
I have been out asked by a traveller girl! I declined - 5 years later she blossomed into a real stunner!. The Romany travellers I have no problem with as I speak from experience, there are good and bad in every community, I find the English travellers more willing to mix and intergrate...where as the Irish Travellers just want to fight you and take your Transit van.
Dirty old river, must you keep rolling, Flowing into the night.......
