I was wondering what everyones opinion was on which is the best show? I watched The Wire before The Shield and even though both are amazing quality shows I have to give the nod to The Wire. The depth and scope of the charcaters is truly fantastic and these people seem so believable. Also, Omar is the best character in TV history. I really enjoyed The Shield too and it is a faster-paced more traditional cop-show but at times a bit OTT. Still great stuff though.
If you haven't watched either of these shows then I'd advise that you do because you are missing out on quality TV shows.
If you like The Wire I recommend getting (cheap boxset available from the usual retailers) this, which was also created by David Simon and pre-dates The Wire and is set in Baltimore.

I intend to watch Homicide: Life on the street one day, it has had great reviews. I watched The Corner straight after I finished with The Wire and I thought it was pretty good but very depressing to view. We (wife & I) finished watching The Shield last week and are now into our second watch of The Sopranos.
The Wire is one of, if not THE greatest programmes i've ever watched. Seen it through three times now and it just gets better and better on each viewing. The amount of notable characters in it is fucking unreal, Slim Charles, Avon, Cutty, Omar, Bodie.
watched my first episode of The Wire last night. Have season 1 boxset to watch this week. Can't believe the amount of people who have raved about this show so must be good :-)
"The nightmares invading the sleep of Bayern fans involve four horsemen of the Champions League Apocalypse riding towards them. As the faces come into focus, they will recognise Frank Lampard, Cole, Petr Cech and Drogba. All were immense..."

I feel envious that you have it all to watch. It can be a bit slow at first but stick with it. You will be rewarded with an experience that is truly outstanding
Fatbob - I thought the school series was the best of the lot. In fact that single series is IMO the best single series of TV ever. Better than any single series of The Sopranos.
puma-man - They have been on TV but its best to buy the boxsets and watch two or three episodes at a time. Watch them and then sell them on ebay. It'll cost you about a tenner.

A lot of people find the first series to be a bit of a slow burner and get put off after a few episodes but my advice would be to stay with it cos it is a grower and by series 2 you will be totally hooked. I always get jealous when people say they are watching it for the first time.
Might pick up the corner this weekend. Doesnt the actor who plays Cedric Daniels in the wire play a crack head in it? Dont think my brain would be able to process that!

Lester Freemon is a crack addict in The Corner, I can't remember if Cedric is in it. It is a depressing watch tbh and no where near the level of The Wire, but then again what is?
