Have thought more and more about going on a proper trip somewhere lately.. It might be typical winter-dreaming, but it's been a persistent thought for quite a while now.. I'm 20 and done my fair share of travelling, been around Europe with both family and friends, spent two weeks with some friends going round northern california, but I've been thinking about going for at least a few months. South America is a dream for me, travelling around on coach. Loads of my friends have already been on these kinds of trips, two friends are going to Colombia next month and will travel south america for two months afterwards.. There's loads of obstacles, I'm at uni in London, pretty broke without a job, in a relationship etc.. But then again, now is the time to do these things I reckon. Have thought about asia as well as it's cheaper..
Share some experiences and recommendations lads..

I was in the Navy so did my travelling on a big grey warship. Best places I went to were India which is an amazing place and really opens your mind. Egypt is a facinating country but I think if you travel anywhere even in Europe it will broaden your horizon and help you understand other people better.
I am planning for my 40th, doing what the top gear crew did a while back, Travelling up the coast of Vietnam on motorcycles with few close friends, missus is againest it, but fuck that its a little dream adventure of mine, since i saw them do it, and be glad to reach 40 Should be fun, bombing around, eating snakes drinking potions and sourcing cheap sucky

Never, ever, argue with an idiot. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience
More than welcome D, be a cracking journey if we make it back alive :)
ive often thought about it ja, it cant be any worse than this place anyway!!!!

Sounds brilliant Ja!! My girlfriend travelled asia last year and was in vietnam for quite a while, said it was amazing. I'm more tempted by south america though, don't know why really, although I wouldn't mind a trip to the phillipines/australia.. Have always been interested in obscure places, would love to go to middle america, panama, honduras, costa rica etc..
Hibbert how was Venezuela and when did you go?

I did NZ and the Ozzy gold coast, then rant out of wonga.
Like you South America has always been top of my list for the next trip. Asia holds no wonder for me to be honest. Unfortunately work, relationships and mortgages have got in the way. If you can, do it now as it may be the last time before other commitments take priority
gotta admit if I ventured into South America very much doubt I would come back alive, :(
Got loads of friends who's been down there and have been absolutely fine. And it's not as if they kept their heads down. If you're sensible I believe you'll be just fine in most cases.
Think I'll do my bachelor first, and then when I'm done with that I'll take a break off.. Gives me time to save up as well

A lad I know got caught up in some drug shenanigans in Peru. Ended up with the police planting 3 kilos in his hotel room and bribing him out of about £500. He is a bit of a bell end though.
I have lived in London for 2 years between 2004/2006, well Thames Ditton and Carshalton but close enough ;) so travelled to pretty much every country between the UK and Turkey and down to Morrocco which was immense culminating in the WC 2006. Then went to Asia for the Asian Cup 2007 mostly in Thailand and Vietnam but also Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong where I saw Liverpool v Portsmouth in a very odd pre season tournament.
Have now travelled pretty much all over Australia following Sydney FC and heading back to Japan in March for the Asaina Champions League.
So if anyone wants any info on any of these places let me know and I will do my best to give decent advice from my sometimes hazy memory.
i have travelled a little over the years. Went to Malaysia, Thailand & Singapore a couple of years ago. brilliant experience. Last summer, I went to around the USA. Hopefully this year, I am planning to go to South America. Definitely want to visit Brazil and Mexico. One of the reasons why I went into teaching, can;t wait to raise money every year to go travelling 6 weeks during the summer
Get out there mate, if not you will regret it, loads of stuff i,d wish i,d done before the kids came along , didnt do too bad just should have done loads more while i had the chance
I was lucky enough to get a sabbatical after 10 years working for the same company. This mean't getting 16 weeks fully paid holiday. Single and 28 years old at the time, it was perfect. So filled a backpack and fucked off around SE Asia, Australia, NZ, US and Canada. Not quite the gap year kids get to do now, but a great experience nonetheless. Some great memories, learnt to surf in some unforgettable spots, watched a few England ODI's in NZ, culminating in drinking with the squad (inc Goughy and Freddie) in Dunedin. On my return, met my future wife and eventually settled down. When the opportunities come along.... GRAB EM!
Its certainly something I'm planning on doing after I finish my degree, in which I'm hopefully travelling anyway as part of my placement year - been looking at teaching English in Saudi for a year. Provides good pay and plenty of time off (Ramadan and other festive periods in their calender) in which I can go explore other areas of the Middle East and perhaps even Australia.
Also looking into doing a month around Europe next summer using the inter-rail scheme with the end of the road being Poland/Ukraine.
I was lucky in that I took redundancy and found a job that started in 6 months.
A lot of fun in Asia, Oz and NY during that time.
I was a little aprehensive as I went on my own and was over the normal age for doing that (over 30) but hardly spent any time travelling on my own. A real eye opener if you pay any attention to the locals and don't come the 'I'm here to find myself' sh!te.
I'd love to do South America but doubt I'll be able to do that now until I'm retired - get out there before you get tied down!
wish id done it when i was younger....but never even thought about it,,,,getting itchy feet now though,,,i still could i suppose...single,nae kids etc..im 35 though,,,..id go for it mate
