Personally, I've got a Dualit espressivo jobbie that makes a better brew than anywhere - even my Mrs prefers mine over Starbucks. A little bit more hassle than instant but well worth it. I always use Lavazza and the taste is beaut !!

IMO to get decent a decent shot from an espresso machine you have to spend a bit on the right grinder and machine (one with a proper group head) and also buy good quality freshly roasted beans.
I would also recommend you buy roasted beans and grind them yourself.
I am quite into all this and can recommend buying beans from this guy (Here) I have been buying from him for about 7-8 years and he has never let me down, his rating system is very good and from experience anything rated above 90 is superb. He also batch roasts so the beans you order are generally less than a day old - which is very fresh when compared to the stuff you buy in the supermarket.
For the filter machine spending a bit on the right grinder is probably the best way to spend your money. The actually machines are all failry similar in performance they are generally just thermosyphons, so quite simple.
As for the actual brew you have to balance the amount of water to the weight (volume) of coffee.
My general rule for filter coffee is 18-20g of coffee for 500ml of water in the machine.
As much as this sounds a bit of a faff, it does work.
This is a pic of my espresso set-up (pic is from when I lived in Gloucester)
Isomac Rituale - Espresso Machine Mazzer Mini - Grinder
I also have a Dualit filter machine and use the same grinder (on a coarser setting).
What ever you do don't buy a pod machine these are a complete waste of time and money.
Hope that helps, if you need anymore help let me know and I can point you to some good websites if you are interested

Personally I use a bog standard Bialetti Moka Express, costs about £25 screws together.... Makes excellent Coffee on the flame everytime.
Buy your own coffee beans grind them up or buy one already ground at your local Coffee bar or a packet of the finest you can buy, it is brilliant, I like coffee, it is bellissimo.
Trick to thick and kick ass coffee is the amount of water you use in the Bailetti less you use the stronger it is.
