^^^^^ What!! There's loads of rugby in Brum and the black country. I should no, I've played against all of them at one time or another.
I've played since I was 5, I'm 41 now. Cart the old body out for a vets game once a month or so. Play for Old Halesonians these days. I love the game. Has been very good to me. And anyone who barbours a stereotype about rugby players and clubs get up here for the most working class set up ever.
I have played county rugby, international rugby and a season in NZ. It's the fucking bollocks and for attitude, respect, hard work, friendship and a fucking good laugh there is none better.
Was surprised by some of the sweeping statements in this thread TBH.
i like it, although i couldnt tell you which version. another high energy contact sport, youl not see any daft cunts diving around. pure physical and mental competition between two sides, but with respect.
reached for the secret too soon, cried for the moon.

Agree Anchorman. What was your position then? You seem like a back row man to me...

I too used to play for Old Halesonians, played from primary school through to college. But there are only some many times as a 14 yr old I could hear - 'By the hairs of her dicky dye doe', "Swing low, sweet chariot" etc... and inhale the smell of Ralgex on a coach whilst eating rare-cooked horse on a tour of France with said club. *Shudders*
When I was a kid they started a rugby program at my primary school. Never taken much of an interest in the game (was football or nothing) but really enjoyed it. Ended up playing at school/club/city level for years after. It's got a real stigma attached because rugby lads are by and large wankers but as a sport it's pretty enjoyable. Not too into watching it (except the odd international) but it's a really enjoyable game. Played at full back or on the wing so never needed to be the biggest and always enjoyed outrunning some of the public school lumps I'd play against.

Heaven forbid someone give an opinion! I was speaking from personal experience, hardly a sweeping statement. Bit like the casualco thread, people have the right to critique if they see fit! And we're all well aware of rugby's condescending attitude towards football and football fans. Like I said, rugby's a great game but I don't like the social side to it, at least not over here.

At the risk of upsetting Mr.Anchor . And in answer to your post.
" and socially join a rugby club and all of a sudden they're swanning around town on a Sunday afternoon after their match in a blazer thinkin they're the mutt's nuts."
From my experiences at work on a Saturday night. I find the biggest Wands of all are the people who wear stripey blazers adorned with Stourbridge RFC badges. And additionally, when I was in the barbers the other week. If I'd have been cutting the hair of the person who on leaving pulled on a Old Halesonian Rugby club hat had spoke to me in the same as he did the barber. He'd have left without a f*ckin' head and with my spit running out of his neck.
There are a few rugby lads in my town who are right tits, but there are also a few football lads who are tits as well! But as in any walk of life there are a lot of good lads in both the rugby & football.
Grown up around Rugby League and the bitter rivalry between Hull FC & Hull KR (East/West), played as a kid and loved the buzz of it, followed FC along with HCFC which had a crossover of supporters. Still follow Super League on Sky and nothing beat a good derby day @ Boulevard sneaking over the gents toilets to get in............ love it, Union naw never really bothered to watch.

Enjoy watching super league myself and would love to take in a Hull derby sometime. Seems to have a crackin atmosphere. I'm sure the fans get on very well too!! (tongue in cheek). Didn't they have a little dance at the Millenium Stadium a few years back that made the papers?
We used to all bounce up and down non stop @ Boulevard, while Chanting Old Faithful, Don't get too many games nowadays but always like to get to a derby every now and then, yeah fuse paper atmosphere for Rugby League, and Super League has done it wonders, but way behind Aussies imo.... Different level.....
@Gelse "Agree Anchorman. What was your position then? You seem like a back row man to me..."
Yes G played all over the back row. Plus one season at hooker, disaster and one season a tight head - moderate success.
@casualco - I dont begrudge anyone an opinion - and my opinion is that there are some sweeping statements in this thread.
@David.Watts - Your'e just a cunt and any fucker who goes into the Swan's VIP room is plainly a wand regardles of stripey blazer, G star jeans or super dry T shirt...

What were you saying about sweeping statements?
BTW - I agree about the Swan. I just work the VIP door doe' I, ya Caaaaaannnnt. Make no odds to me who goes up (stripey blazers aside) as long as they behave themselves, they ain't so pis*ed that they can't walk up the stairs. And they don't aggravate me as they wait in the queue.
^^^^^ That was not a sweeping statement - a point of fact...The fact that I have never been in the Swan let alone the VIP room should not in any way detract from my fact based point. Ahem.
