Newcastle's a great little town, it's where my ma lives.
I assume you'll be staying in the Travel Lodge? If so, nip across the A34 to The Old Brown Jug, it's less than a minutes walk. Good selection of cask ales, decent music, can be busy though, especially on weekends and Wednesdays. Quite often stuff on, bands etc.
If you're up for a quieter pint in nice surroundings head towards Morrisons and you'll find The Boat and Horses which is a nice little place. If you head up towards Heartshill you'll find The Museum, and a little further up The Greyhound, the latter of which is a Titanic pub and has some decent and strong ale on tap. All these are within 5 to 10 minute walk away from the Travel Lodge. Shalimar Indian is a couple of minutes away too and opens late for a curry before bed.
Avoid the centre unless you're after some cheap baggy clout - in which case head straight to Brassos.
Once had the misfortune of spending 2 nights at the Premier Inn at Newcastle Under Lyme with work. There's a Taybarn pub next door which does an all you can eat deal for £10 or something. I've never seen so much snide Stone Island under one roof in all my life.
Carl is actually bang on - Newcastle Under Lymme is a fucking shit hole. Played rugby there many times. In and out. Mind you'll get a wrights pie.

I'd be more worried about returning home with your shoes and socks mate, they'll more than likely get nicked.
Some strange responses IMO, I've always considered Newcastle as relatively posh. That said, it seems most peoples experiences are actually of Chesterton, rather than Newcastle.
