Morning gents,
I know there are a fair number of cyclists on here so was hoping to get a bit of advice on buying a new (second hand) bike. I'm going to be commuting about 3/4 miles each way per day and it doesn't seem worth taking the bus seeing as lockers/showers are available on arrival. I've cycled in the past but have always gone for a cheap mountain bike, which after a few weeks becomes a total hassle - too heavy, not quick enough etc. What sort of price should I be looking at for a decent-ish second hand bike, ideally one which I won't have to do any work to and will be decent from the work go? I'm not a great fan of fixies due to their impracticality but quite like the look of some of the Bob Jackson type racing bikes I've seen. Also, where would it best best to buy one from - ebay/gumtree or going to a specialist retailer?
Mountain Bike wise (Sorry, no fuck all about racers!) you should be able to pick up a few years old specialized hardrock/rockhopper for £200ish. Superb bikes for the money and built to last.
Keep your eye on gumtree in your area, normally full of half decent bikes near me.

Never argue with an idiot, he will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience!
Woah, swerve them Vikings mate, they are SHIT from what I've heard. As said gumtree is your best bet, your pick up a descent runner for under £200 no need to spend more if it's just going to and from work. If you plan to use it outside of work as well, maybe bump it up to £300. You will get a very good 2nd hand bike for that.
