Stephen Fry has written the screenplay for this and has insisted that the dogs name, N***er, should be changed to Digger so as to not upset anyone. I can fully understand that but the other issue is that N***er was also the codeword for the operation itself. Should we be re-writing history in order to not cause offence? What d'ya reckon? Change the dogs name to Digger or leave it as N***er and just have Samuel Jackson to play Guy Gibson*
*Having said that, it will no doubt be Americanised anyway.
Zitat von get the beer inExcuse my ignorance but why was the dog called N***er.
Yeah like Gelse says, it is Latin for black. You have to remember that the n-word wasn't a derogatory word in Britain back then and many pets were called N***er. That is the issue here I think.
call my dog rasta when i`m out... none has a problem with that and his a white fluff ball ..... looks like his got dreadloks when he ain`t had a cut can`t see a problem with it ITS A FUKIN DOG WITH A NAME whatever his called ..... only controversy is that its on a screen and open to the media spotlight so a bit pathetic but has to be done imo
it should be left the way it is, the story isnt made up its historical. i wish all this scared to offend anybody shite would go away, as said rap music is full of it and no one takes offence(maybe some people) but it doesnt stop it. what it boils down to in this country is people think other people will be offended by things when they dont actually know if said people will be offended at all. just like most things if it is taken out of context then its meaning is lost.
Never, ever, argue with an idiot. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience
It's just a word.. words only become offensive when used in a certain context. In some cases, the word Nigger can be extremely offensive and disgusting. In others, it can be used as a term of endearment or to infer friendship. I can see why it's been changed, but people will always find stuff to get offended over.. it shouldn't be pandered to in my opinion.
It's fucking bollocks and fry should know better. I think certain black people have turned the word into a power thing. We can use it but woe behold any White man who does!
Language evolves constantly a classic example in our lifetime is the word gay. It has gone through three connotations I know off. Gay = happy Gay = nufter Gay = a derogatory term of a abuse.
It's fucking words and we should never ever deny or alter history.

I understand the whole issue about blacks 'reclaiming' the n-word and I have no problem with that. The young Asian lads are at it now with the p-word. Let 'em get on with it.
I can see both sides of the argument to be fair D. The film-makers know that it would be a disaster with American audiences if white British men with funny accents in Lancasters were dropping the n-word reguarly and it would bomb financially. They aren't educated or interested enough to understand that the word meant nowt in Britain at the time.
On the other hand the film-makers are re-writing history. If it was just the dogs name then maybe it wouldn't be an issue but it was the all important operational codeword which is sort of central to the story.
Being objective I can see why a filmmaker'd be paranoid about Yanks getting het up about white people using the word 'nigger.'
Think back to Pulp Fiction - the dialogue had black people and white people using it in context ('ghetto' and 'white trash' characters, say). Yet plenty of americans raiulewd agasint it. Spike Lee included: http://www.daveyd.com/spikepolitics.html
Tarantino loves to shock with violence and controversy of course. Can't imagine someone like Stephen Fry setting out his stall that way. Ergo political correctness right from the outset. Shame really, I think it compromises his integrity.
It's not completely historically accurate anyway so changing the name of the dog is small fry IMO. We should be far more concerned about hollywood claiming credit for the yanks for every single thing that happened in ww2.
I'm not really sure of all this pressure, I'm never gonna lose any of my old letters, 'Cause they'll stay with me, Until I can see that I'm no one

Pretty much my take on it. The word wasnt offensive then, it is now. Its just a word. More important in my eyes is what an American production of it is likely to do to the story and its historical context. Why does it need a remake anyway ?
It's a film based on the mission not a historical documentary so it doesn't matter. All films based on history are changed for the entertainment of the public and to make money so they will not want some of the paying public being offended. The dog will be called Digger in the film and hopefully if any one is that interested in the actuall facts about the mission that the film is based on they will research it and find the real facts.

Just noticed you said the N word was the codename for the operation itself. It was not. It was the code to be broadcast if the Mohne dam collapsed. Chastise was the codename for the operation.

Yeah, that is what I meant actually, it is in the original film and used to be shown on Sunday afternoons and no one batted an eyelid.
