I've been there quite a few times and had many great nights in the Altstadt (the old town with loads of bars, pubs, clubs and so on...), a lovely place.
As i said for drinks and a good night out just head to the Altstadt (oldtown, only a few footsteps from the river Rhein). You'll find old fashioned german pubs, clubs , modern bars for cocktails and so on, good places to eat, cafes but also historic buildings or museums ... i'd start at the Rheinufer (bank of the river) and have a couple of pints there or just walk along the river, always a good atmosphere. If you want you can do a shipping on the river after that. There is a boat called the "Weisse Flotte", you pay around 10 pounds for 1 hour guided tour on the river and you can drink as much Beer as you want (or should i say you can) After that i'd just head into the Altstadt. Area is called "Längste Theke der Welt" too, which means something like "biggest bar in the world" ...
Can't say much about the sights as i mainly go there for booze with ma mates But Düsseldorf is quite famous as a city of arts. So if you are interested in stuff like that you can find very good art-museums. You can went on the Rhein-tower and have a fantastic view over the city. And of course the Köningsallee which is one of germanys most famous shopping miles. Loads of nice shops with many brands and highstreet fashion.
If you fancy a redlight district just head out of the train station, only a few foot steps from there, area called "Bahndamm" ...
Feel free to drop me am PM if you've got further questions.
I don't have a clue but it's really common here. Nearly every bigger city here in germany got a redlight district or at least a few whorehouses near the train station
been once but didnt see much of the place, stuck in a multi-storey carpark most of the time, redecking the place. some place near the riverside was mentioned, and obviously the redlight area.
If it's not too hot that day defintely walk up the tower of the Cologne Cathedral. Around 150 metres high and you'll have a nice view above the city. And you can visit the chocolate-museum which is based at the river and not far from the cathedral. I've been there twice and always liked it. So if you are a chocolate-freak go there, otherwise not. There is a very good and famous museum about the roman time in cologne too (roman-germanic-museum), located only a few metres away from the cathedral. There are many decent places at the banks of the river Rhein and depending on the weather just sit there, have a few pints and watch german girls passing by In the night i'd head into the city centre and visit one of the many bars and pubs in the old town which is only a few steps from the river. There a a few local brewerys too.
That's all i can say, I've never spend much time and I'm sure there are many other good sights in the city.
Oh, and be careful ... it's the capital of gays here in germany
Cologne is a great city. The Seven Floors of Whores place is on the outskirts of the city. And yes the area around the Cathedral and down next to the River really is stunning.
Unfortunately last time I was there all I can remember is being chased down back streets by batton-happy German police through clouds of tear gas.
