Might be a bit odd posting this but over the past six months I've wasted many an hour on here and feel there's a very decent group of lads - no cliques, no attitudes, good humour etc. Anyway a few months ago I applied to a lot of universities in the hope of studying towards a PhD in History. The news was mainly negative for a while. My field is quite specialist (Cold War commodity competition) so my options were limited. Initially I hoped to go to the USA but a lack of funding put paid to that. Finally after a lot of waiting I've been told that my application to UCL has been accepted and that I'll be given a living stipend and have my fees paid for. It's a massive weight off my mind and makes working two shite jobs, knocking off 60-70hr weeks, scrimping and saving to be able to pay for the course really seems worth it. Anyway I hope that in three years or OffHand will have it's own doctor of history....after which I'll be unemployed and the universities investment in me will seem like a massive indulgence
cheers for the kind words lads, really buzzing here. Gelse - you're probably right, but it's an opportunity I can't turn down and col I took enough stick from my mates for doing a degree in the first place this will be like water off a ducks back!
Zitat von sauzee88 ....after which I'll be unemployed and the universities investment in me will seem like a massive indulgence
Many a true word spoken in jest. And without wishing to p*ss on your chips. My best mate has a PHD in Biology. His dissertation was on cot death and was published in The Lancet. After becoming a Doctor of Science and working a few jobs none related to his qualification after got made redundant from his position claim handling at the Child Support Agency he is now a pipe fitter. Working under various mates who didn't get get any O levels let alone a degree. Yet earn considerably more than him and although their knowledge of pipe fitting is not be questioned is it perhaps not the best use of the talents of someone who has spent years in education to get to the place where they are conducting researched into reducing the amount of new born children being lost in the first few months of their life's but then couldn't get a job in said field or any near it for love nor money?
well done mate I work in a University so am familiar with the 'working week' of an academic and a student joking aside, nice bit of news for you
"The nightmares invading the sleep of Bayern fans involve four horsemen of the Champions League Apocalypse riding towards them. As the faces come into focus, they will recognise Frank Lampard, Cole, Petr Cech and Drogba. All were immense..."
Was having some farewell drinks with our course lecturers a few weeks back. They need new QS academics as everyone in the department is getting on a bit. I didn't realise that undergraduate courses are only aprt of what they do.
The Summer is made up of courses for international students and accelerated learning weeks. Apparently this is where the smart money is.
As soon as I found out you don't get 6 weeks off in the Summer I wasn't interested
