I find it really sad, had a conversation with a pal of mine and his lad has passed his car test. He paid for them as part of his birthday present. Now he wants a car but insurance is stupid money and the lad expects his dad to pay to which he his barmy fooker. Now after telling a few lads this seems the norm and exceptable! Now forgive me but when i passed my old man said if you cant afford to run a car on your own then dont have one ! i mean i know £1400 seems alot for car insurance, but in reflection when i was 18 i was on £55 a week and my insurance was £400 I think there is a massive change in society now where if it costs to much its all so easy for dad to pay............rant over

Very true Jonah. A couple of my mates still get there pappa to help them out when they want something new, eg, a motor. For fucks sake, you are 28 years old you twat, grow a pair and look after yourself. They don't even need a new car, but know they can get it with the help of the 'rents.

Im only jealous!
It makes me laugh, i wouldn't dare ask my old man he would have given me loads just for asking!

Its tragic when I see lads in their mid twenties still living off their parents. I've been working since I was 16 and in secondary school. I still have that job and now go college as well.
And car insurance is silly, for me it was 2.6k for a year on a Mini Mayfair. In the end I just got a motorbike, £700 fully comp on a £2000 11 plate bike.
My mother has not paid fuck all towards my driving lessons, 600 quid it's cost so far.......my Mrs had about 50 lessons and 1 test. about 1200 quid....and her parents bought her a 10 grand mini and paid her 3 grand insurance for her....Two different worlds imo.
My parents paid for my driving lessons but I pay for all my clothes that I buy. I have a job and earn my money but obviously i'm working part time so not earning a huge amount. I'm not sure what will happen when I pass. The main reason they paid for them was so that I wouldn't be walking back from work/places very late at night. I didn't ask them for it, that was their choice. My parents made the decision to give my brother and I the best upbringing they could. They were both traditionally working class but went to Uni and now have very respectable jobs. They've never been big spenders so if they want to spend their money on that i'm not going to complain.
I think there is an important difference between being spoilt and having a few things provided. I mean if I asked my parents to buy me 90% of what I buy they'd tell me where to go. It's all about choice for them really.
Quote by SAFCBeaufortthe youth of today eh, what nonsense. this wont apply to a huge % of 'youth' im pretty sure of that.
I agree with that, I'm 26 and have passed my test but don't own a car anymore cos they cost too much to run. There's no way my mam would've paid for driving lessons/car insurance for me, I wouldn't have accepted if she offered to pay anyway.
My younger brother's 19 and only one of his friends has a car (which his parents bought him). Most of them have next to no money, the youth of today have less money than ever and everything's getting dearer, it's a shite state of affairs to be in.
I don't think there's anything wrong with it to an extent. You work your nuts off to provide for your family. When the time comes I'll have no problem paying for my kids driving lessons and a motor, as long as they have proper values and are aware of the cost of things.
It does make my laff though when some of the kids at my birds school are driving nicer cars than the teachers. This isn't exactly a wealthy area either. I thought youth unemployment was at an all-time high
Yep 2.6k. Once I turn 18, that will drop to about 1.6k I think. Thats still a silly amount of money for a years driving, add to that maybe the £30 petrol money a week, and it just gets so expensive.
I can do around 100 miles to the gallon on my motorbike, so if I'm not cruising around a lot, that will easily last me two/three weeks, for only £6.
My first car cost me £80 and was a banger, had to get my hands dirty to get it through the mot vauxhall chevette coupe Filled with p38 from holfords and always down the scrap yard getting bits Think its a shame that alot of kids get stuff so easy on a plate for them. Its funny how times have changed most kids now wouldn't been seen dead in an old banger....................look at the mobile phone craze !

ive bought a bike for less than 20 quid, and that hopefully will do me for getting in an out of work/uni for the next however many years. its an absolute beauty too. i refuse to pay for driving lessons/car/insuranca until it is totally necessary for my day to day living, and when that time comes, i will be paying for it.
reached for the secret too soon, cried for the moon.
Quote by BDBI need to pay for fuckin everything as my mom won't give it to me. I don't mind, she needs to money herself.
i wouldnt of took it anyway ..... always stood on my own two feet and moved out of home when i was 20 never asked any of my parents for anything financial
The only way people can drive these days is if their parents pay, it seems. Everyone I know of my age who can drive, their parents paid, and those who can't (that includes myself), their parents didn't. Your talking over 2 grand just to get going - what a waste. A mate of mine had to pay over a grand to insure a car he bought for 80 quid.
I've managed to live and work in various places in this country for 5 years without a car and it's never bothered me. It even means I can be a self righteous bastard when someone complains about me smoking... "do you drive a motor vehicle mate?"

Honestly mate, money wise, motorbikes are just so much more value. Buy a brand new bike for 2k and in 1 year you can sell it for 1.7k (if its a Honda). You'll get over a hundred miles to the gallon, and the insurance will probably be about £500 or less if your older than 20. I think I'll be keeping a bike for a year or two, then I'll get a car when my insurance should be less than £1200. Its still quite a lot though.
My parent are alright for money. Not exactly minted but everything we wanted as kids we had. As soon as I was 17 they paid for 1 lesson a week until I passed our test. Me and my two brothers all bought brand new cars when we passed and paid for everything ourselves.
Always told that you can have nice things by working hard.
Saved up for my own driving lessons, my mum gave me £50 when it came to my test. I only passed my test as I would have probably needed it for an apprenticeship (which didn't come sadly) and looks good on CV. Last car I drove was a 5 series cabriolet at a valeting job I had 2 year ago.
Pay my own way for just about everything in the household. We're not minted but we aren't poor. Chip in for the bills, buy all my own clothes, booze, pay for my own days out, contact lenses, phone bill. Not bad to say i'm 21, never really ask for much from my parents.
My parents got me my driving license in my 18 years birthday present but never owned a car.
Can afford one but fuck do i need 1. Too much money and no real need for it. Could i use a car, yes. Do i need a car, no.
My dad co-signed my loan to buy my appartment but that was mainly so a 22 year old could get a loan in that magnitude, and he didnt sponsor anything towards it.
Taking my kid-brother to Sheffield to watch the derby in october and so far it has run me around 600 pounds for the trip in total. My parents insisted on to sponsor a some of the trip cause the felt it was too much money for me to pay for him. I didnt ask for it but i wont refuse it either.
What i can get fuming over these days is kids who expect their parents to pay for them even when they moved away from home.
They've done studies, you know. 60% of the time it works, every time.
My parents underwrote a loan which meant that I could leave work and go and do a masters. They've helped me out with rent when I was out of work and let me live at theirs rent free when I finished university. Having said that I've never asked them to give me money for something like a car and I've never expected that they'll pay for anything. Having said that part of having kids is being able to provide for them i.e. giving them a place to stay even after they've left home. As far as it being a generational thing I think that there probably are more kids who takes the piss these days but the OPs mate needs to take a look at himself, he raised his kid so it's his responsibility to kick him into shape and stop him acting like a spoiled brat. Just my 2 cents on things.
