Can't remeber last time motor went in for MOT and didnt fail
Went in for a service and MOT over vauxhall garage and punched the air with delight when he told me it was just a headlight adjustment.
However didnt fail elsewhere however 'recommended' the break discs changed as only 30% left so and break fluid needs changing so theres another 160 quid on serivce/mot price. 300 dint in the fookin mastercard coming later today I imagine.
Took my motor in for a service and cam belt change in Febuary. Had it done at the main dealer as they were doing a 'special' price for cambelts.....450 quid.....bargain. Anyway takes the car in and the snotty little shite at the dealership said, the water pump may need doing. Fuck it i said its' only done 40k. Anyway about an hour later get's a call, "right sir, we've done a visual check and you need new windscreen wipers" " How much" i said 60 quid! "fuck that i'll do it myself" "Oh and your disc brakes need changing" he said "that will be 260" " No it fucking well won't i'll do that myself anall". Hour later i get's another call, "your gonna need a water pump, that'll be another 120" Now anyone who knows about changing a water pump knows the cam belt has to come off! The bastard's had me by the bollocks! "Now there's a fucking suprise" i said!!!! Anyway cut a very long story short, took the car for it's MOT last month and there's no mention of any issue with the brakes.
Used to run several garages gents and pads and discs and cambelt are bonus money to them , be carefull and ask for the old parts and take them with you , friend of mine got a job at kwickfit many moons ago , basic and bonus, he asked what the bonus was and he was handed a tin of wd40 and told to spray every shocker that came in and get the punter out to see its leaking , 5 a pair bonus in them days, tbf to him he walked strait out , its dangerous out there -).
my car is being done at the minute. got a deal on groupon for a £15 MOT but it is costing me £350!!!! apparently the front brake pipe burst when they did the emergency brake test which obviously made it unroadworthy so if i wanted to take it elsewhere its a case of paying for it to be towed and paying for a re-test. obviously not going to do that so just had to bend over and take it. apparently needed 2 tyres so got part-worns to keep cost down but couldn't work out how they got the £350 from so i phoned em back. turns out the front brake system was leaking, also summat about the hand brake, a registration plate light being out, number plate defective etc. etc. but they couldn't give me a proper breakdown. they said they will explain it all when i pick car up. i'd already authorised the work so nowt i can do anyway but i want to know what they have done and why when i pick it up. also want to see the burst pipe to make sure it was actually burst but i don't want to look like i'm being an arse about it (and not sure how i would know if it had burst of it's own accord or made to look that way). and what do i say if they have "lost" the old parts?
I was an mot tester for 9 years and have had a few brake pipes break on me, the rules are if you break it you fix it ,unless it was corroding and leaking at the time , have a good look for corrosion at the old pipe and if its not corroded tell them to do one , how they get to 350 is beyond me , hard times mean people dont service there cars like they should do so the only time to spank them is mot time -(

some useful info there mate - thanks. on the phone they said it was corroded so they have obviously been thinking along the same lines. it's not a brand new car so there could very well have been corrosion though to be fair. another reason to ask for a look at the old pipe all the same. don't think they said the pipe was leaking though, checked the brake fluid levels beforehand and they were a bit down but still above the level. might have been a small leak i suppose.
