Pretty sure the dockyard picture is taken looking south from the marshes off Stratford high street near the Blackwall Tunnel interchange. Can't find a better link right now but Don McCullin (most famous for his work in Nam) took a lot of photos of the homeless in the east end in a similar period: http://greatwen.com/2010/02/10/don-mccullins-london/ worth having a look. there's a permanent exhibit of them at the Tate too.
Steve - a little while back I took my gran over to the east end. She was born in Tooting but worked at the Royal in Whitechapel. She hasn't been back there in a good few years (since moving to Essex) but it was amazing to hear her talk about how the area had changed. She's in her 80s but could still go on about buying clothes in Petticoat Lane and blokes selling puppies/chickens on the street. Even over my lifetime Londons changed beyond all recognition. When I was little Shoreditch/the east end in general were still really run down, bits of the center (especially round southwark/bermondsey) still had loads of warehouses/yards scattered around, not as much glass except on the Isle of Dogs. Amazing how the city evolves really.
