Passed my driving test the other week, now going to get a car etc sorted for september, got a good 2 months to look for one.....Anyone in the know as to what to look for when buying a used car ? Trying to avoid auctions and my cousin is a car mechanic so he said he will pop along with me to have a look.
Basically don't go for anything with more than 1.2 engine as they will rape you on your insurance. That is me assuming you are having your own policy opposed to being a named driver on someone elses.
Just make sure they have a valid MOT and V5 once you have checked the car and are happy. If you are being proper fussy you will want service history as well.
i wouldnt go near a VW . My mates mum bought a fairly new golf and the turbo blew on it after about 6 months £500 (kerching) to fix Fords are good but very boring and everyones got one. If they do go wrong there not too expensive to fix. but for reliability go for a japanese motor.

Aslong as they're diesel's I've been getting quotes for 1.4's that are less than 1.0 petrol's....really is strange.
I've been told to get a VW by everyone along the way haha, Passed in an 11 plate golf, would fucking love one, he'd get about 60mpg urban in it.....Absolute cracker, i would consider finance.....But im not sure, if i was offered one with insurance thrown in i would be willing to pay quite a bit per month. Or leasing one but i see that as throwing money away in fairness. Im a bit confused, glad i've plenty of time to think things over !
You can't go wrong with a vw,well built and reliable I've had 3 golfs and 2 audi, never had any bother with them.tried other makes ford, vauxhall,Citroen,Nissan ,Renault total shite compared to vw.your cousin should know any how
Quote: jack5 wrote in post #6I would choose a second hand car to start with as well. You WILL crash it.
Thanks for the vote of confidence mate
As for the cheapest to insure being a corsa, the quotes i've had on small engined hatchbacks a corsa will always come out as being 50% more than the likes of a polo/lupo/fox/fiesta
I drive a 1L corsa. It's shite, but never caused me any problems. By next summer Il have my licence 2 yrs and 2 yrs NCB so may upgrade to something with a bit more oompf

Lovely steve ? Which one ? mk4 or mk5 ? Class either way, whats that like on the fuel ?
mines a mark 5 , fuel consumption can be heavy .. as for someone saying Clio is shite / what utter horseshit .. my wife gets a new Clio every one / two years , has had for last 6ish years , and we've never had any issue with her cars ..

Have a prang in a Clio and they fall to bits fact,vw are built to last
Fook me everyones a jeremy clarckson.....get yourself the cheapest run about you can...drive it into the ground... Buy something decent when you can actualy drive properly
I think I've mentioned this before to you, but as already mentioned, as a teenager you will get hammered with the cost of insurance with anything over 1 or 1.2 litres.
Buy whatever takes your fancy, its a learning curve, part and parcel of owning a car, fucking up, repairs big bills etc, Had most kind of cars and you learn by your own mistakes not others. everybody drives differently just make sure you know its history. Enjoy
