Sparks steak house midtown for a treat. cafe yaffa and 3rd avenue deli east village. When I lived there the last two were regular haunts. Swifts Hibernian lounge 4th street just west of the Bowery was a good bar next to where I worked. Mcsorleys ale house, barmacy, both east village (if they're still going, I came back in 2000. Chinatown is ace for food too, also amazing atmosphere there. Planet Hollywood, seriously? Don't go places like that. do some research, ask the peoplle where you're staying where they go. Century 21 can be ace bargain hunting too. You'll get ace sardines virtually anywhere too
I want three things; Toms Diner from Seinfeld, the pastrami sandwich from Katz and wisit Coney Island. Since my better half has done some excellent research on her shopping I was thinking to do some for myself. We are going to stay in East Village, so going to check out the bars nefc recomended. Thanks.
^^ i worked in east village (phebe's place, on the corner of bowery but its changed hands since then. it was a dive when i was there). kgb bar same street was good. st marks place is good for a freak show people watch. normans sound and vision was a BRILLIANT second hand records gaff - theres a few of them about. brooklyn heights was 'up and coming' when i was there. apparently its arrived now. over the brooklyn bridge (walk it, then turn round when you reach half way on the bridge, - not before - for an ace view), then it's down on the right. bleeker street - runs from east to west villages has loads of good bars and places to eat. maceys is worth a visit too. washington square diner, west (greenwich) village is good too. you really cant go wrong for food in manhattan though. in the previous post i meant ace sarnies, although im sure the sardines are good too. speaking of which, south street seaport has some nice restaurants with good views but its a bit touristy. ask in places where they'd recommend. the people are really friendly. rough guide to new york is a good book with some great reccomendations in. you'll effing love it. you jammy sod

Mind me asking what you were doing out there?
Bruno's on Lafeyette had the best coffee/cheese cake I've ever had. The Guggenheim is well worth a visit too
worked in a couple of bars, one in east village and one in sunnyside, queens. no visa, cash in hand. for a single english fella, new york is a great place to be. use these phrases with abandon for great results (chuck a posh accent in too): bollocks; I say; chaps (they love that); bugger. the english accent works for you in new york, but go to smaller places and the effect is much bigger.

Sounds "spiffing". My missus is American so moving over there is an option although anywhere outside the larger, more liberal cities is pretty lacking in appeal.
Ino in the West Village has the best Panini around.
Small Italian sandwich shop.
If you can try and stop in at the new World Trade site... memorial fountain & garden are now open to the public. Right across the street is Century 21.
I thought the shopping was rubbish in NYC. So many good things to see, don't waste whatever short time you have on shopping. Staten Island Ferry is a perfect way of seeing the city for free, just get back on the next one and back into Manhattan. Do the bus tour for at least a day. We found them a great way of seeing the city and was even better when the guide was a native, found out so many cool facts. Oh they do tickets with a free ferry and ESB/Rockefeller.
We went in February and I loved every second of it. Next up will be SF.
A good way to see all the boros and view NYC from a good perspective... do the boat tour around the islands. You'll see all of Manhattan, the bridges, the buildings.... good thing to do on a sunny day if you have never been to NYC.
the hop on/ off bus tours are very good too...depends if you get a good guide though as some are fucking annoying! and then they do their service industry / tips speech!!!
Dirty old river, must you keep rolling, Flowing into the night.......
having lived in London , I thought it was a diverse city , till we visited New York .. I loved and hated it in equal measures .. when we went to Nepenthes , the guys who worked in there were very friendly and chatty , Daiki Suzuki was there , and I didn't want to leave , we got chatting , had coffee nice relaxed time spent in there .. then later walked into Barneys , looking at the Cabourn & Moncler stuff - by fuck they were snobby and snooty , such a contrast .. and I found that to be the case wherever we went , nothing in the middle , but just either ends of the spectrum ..
We qued for ages to get into Serendipity , a cafe made famous by film namesake , what an utter bunch of cunts .. no tip for them fuckers ..
i remember my brother came for a visit from Portugal and he wanted to walk from downtown (Twin Towers/Battery Park) all the way to Central Park in a day... needless to say.
