in the hotel with the door locked ... was there last summer for just over two months ... same day guy got his leg bit off by a shark - English tourist , not sure if anyone remembers ... beaches are lovely , Cape Town centre is ok , but be careful - not a City to be lost in or ambling about at night .. went out in big groups , nightlife was incredible ..
Fantastic city. Just make sure you're careful and you'll be fine. This includes, as everywhere else in South Africa, not walking the streets after dark. Taxis are cheap. It's not a problem. During the daytime, in the city, things are fine.
Many people stay at the Waterfront complex for this very reason; a whole bunch of hotels, restaurants, shops, etc, all on the same site. We didn't but it was good to visit.
Do try and catch some sport when you're there. The Saffers are sports mental and the prices very reasonable. Not sure if cricket season will have started or rugby will still be on. Rugby is a religion in SA so catch a game if you can.
If you want to see how the other half live, take a township tour. You go in a group with a local guide. Perfectly safe, unlike going to a township by yourself.
Make sure you go up Table Mountain. Great views and some nice walks when you're up there. Robben Island is also a don't miss; where Mandela spent part of his imprisonment.
Basically, don't let the crime stories put you off but do be careful, and you'll be good.
my time there I regretted never cage diving with great whites .. it cost about £75 , plus a meal on the boat - not that you'll feel like eating .. on top of Table Mountain , there is a cafe / restaurant , can eat outside too , it's incredible - but try and go on a clear day , usually a lot of low lying cloud so try and miss it if you can , the view is incredible ..

If I could go anywhere in the world and do anything, this would be it.

I stayed in a hostel in Long Street, the main drag in Cape Town. Never go out alone, even in the more populated areas at any time - day or night. Never take all your cash/cards. If you are held up, just hand it over - knife and gun crime are rampant.
