Just back from a truely wonderful weekend in Paris. Fantastic place , had a fuckin ball. Tad expensive at times , for instance 30 Euros for two Champagne flutes at the top of the Eiffel Tower .. £6 for a coke in the Park .. Luckily arrived early enough to avoid the q's at the Tower so we went straight to the top no problems .. We stayed in the Opera district , and went up to Sacre Couer every night to a courtyard area for food and drink .. which was first class .. Fogged and delayed both times , last night landed at nearly 10pm , having waited at Orly all day , which was a bit of a downer .. Highlights include the Louvre , seeing Mona Lisa painting , Galleries de Lafayette shopping centre which must be one of the most spectacular in the World , Eiffel Tower , Grand Palais ..
All in all , fantastic place to visit , people were mainly friendly if not a little impatient , buildings incredible ..
I think small parts of Paris have real charm, but walking the streets you realise it's just a filthy, expensive city
Seeing the Mona Lisa has to be one of the most underwhelming experiences ever. Thought the rest of La Louvre was amazing though. Know nothing about art but you can't help but be impressed. The Napoleonic paintings in particular stand out in my hazy memory.
Rained on Saturday night , we got bit wet walking back , but was pissed , but Sunday was a glorious day , bit foggy in the morning , but then got out warm .. had a great stay .. cheers for all your help .. Gard du Nord was an eye opener !!!!!
I don't find Paris so expensive TBH... Do you really see a huge difference compared to London? Hotel prices are about the same (this means expensive), public transports are much cheaper in Paris, Clubs/concerts prices roughly the same I'd say... Taxis are cheaper in London I suppose. If it's about food you can eat good local meals at nice prices if you can manage to avoid tourist traps.
can't compare it being we only skimmed the surface .. but a glass of coke for 6 pounds , never found price like that in London .. taxis and transport I found good value .. we ate at this place in Sacre Couer ..
food and wine was terrific , was found couple of cheaper places with set menus .. what stung me was two glasses of Champagne for 30 euros up top of Eiffel Tower .. :(
Quote: 1985casual wrote in post #13I like the Bastille area the best place to stay, there's more than enough good eateries and brasseries and it is slightly cheaper.
we found a good sushi / sashimi retsuarant as well as a couple of realy good french restaurants in bastille. Pound for pound I think you get better food in france than in Uk but the UK is improving.
