Alright Lads, Thinking of driving down to France with our lass for a short holiday sometime in early 2013. Thought I'd ask you guys for any recommendations of cities or places to visit/stay in France that are really nice. Any info would be appreciated!

i know a lass from stratford-upon-haven, she didnt even know where durham was. my friends wife is from southern france. they normally hire a car and travel about when they visit her parents.
Been to Paris once and northern france countless times, when i was a kid, wouldn't go back to northern france again, paris wasn't nothing special IMO, much prefer london.
The south of france is cracking, theres no point in driving flights are that cheap. If you pick somewhere nice enough you wont need to drive anywhere.

My missus is French, and through her and her family I've got to learn some lovely places if you're looking for somewhere quiet but still relatively easy to get to. Her family is from the region Franche-Comté and one of the most beautiful places I've been to in France resides there, it's called Besançon. It's a gorgeous small city that sits on a river and dates back to Roman times so there's a lot of history there, places of interest and it was defended by the Besançon citadel, which is a superb place to visit.
There's some breath taking scenery and country around there with other great little medieval towns to visit such as Dole.
You can get there relatively easy by flying direct to Lyon and and then getting a train or even better still and probably cheaper, a flight to Basel in Switzerland and then a direct train across the border.
Having been to a number of French cities and larger towns such as Lille, Le Harve, Bordeaux and Rouen, Besançon and that region in particular is probably the nicest I've been to. I could easily live there one day, without doubt.

YorkshireJord : what do you really want to see and do during your holidays? Sea side? country side? big city? mountains? There are lots of different places to visit. With completely different atmosphere/weather/architecture/landscapes/food tradition/wines... Just like it's been said before: I wouldn't really bother driving down to France from UK: it must be cheaper and easier to fly down to a french airport and then hire a car if you want to visit a whole region. High speed train system is also really useful (but can be more expensive than plane, so check prices first).
Soul Stylist -> Thanks to your experience of Besançon, you almost convinced me it's worth a visit :) I don't really know this region even if born not that far away. Dole and its cristal manufactures are worth a look btw.
