Such a dying breed these days, they used to be the heart and soul of the community but sadly the younger generation generally pass it by. Had some cracking times in them over the years. I remember when I was a kid and my grandad was a committee man, on my school holidays I used to help him clean the snooker tables and count the money up in the office. He used to let me keep the change that had fallen on the floor (clearly he'd dropped it for me to keep).
You walk in one now and it's empty. Bring em' back!
I agree Ian they are a dying breed the one i go in is a good place but its more expensive than the local pubs.Back in the old days it was the cheapest in town!
Agreed, used to be great places. Played a lot of snooker when i was younger, played in the Coventry league and visited most clubs. More often than not a decent pint too which is more than can be said for most pubs and cheaper too[smile] Goes to cupboard to dig out my cue and remember the good times
Used to frequent one on a regular basis a few years back, cheap ale and strippers on a Sunday lunchtime. Used to get home and jump on the Mrs she always used to ask "what do they put in the beer?"
Def a dying breed,it's not classed as a working men's club but have a private members community club in our area ,fantastic place with a pool room for the kids etc,a real community spirit..
one near me busy 7 days a week, you see them queing up for opening time. last time i was in was about £2 for a lager. few weeks back. never really been a fan of the place, think it still goes on to a degree, if you sit in some regulars seat theres hell to pay. cant be fucked on with that.
Ones in Barrow are still going strong like, got a few good ones, including one of the last 'men only' ones in the country, The Greengate (Along with the other last 'men only' one in Wallsend where my whole family are originally from, the Ex-service mans club?) Got Labour club and few other member working mans pubs and clubs. All dirt cheap like. Love them me, bottles of Brown Ale for 90p and pint of lager for £1.90... Love being Northern.
mate has just text me from Bishop Auckland Sports Club and it's £4.80 for 2 pints of Stella. Some pubs in Fulham and Putney you'd pay near enough that for 1 pint.
Dirty old river, must you keep rolling, Flowing into the night.......
I paid £5 last night for a pint of cider at the o2 in Brum......Gig venue etc but fucking disgraceful.....A woman next to me bought 4 Vodka RedBull's.....£30........Its a wonder any working mens clubs have ever shut down.....if they do its certainly not to do with the value they offer.
Still go regular with a Scottish pal of mine most Thursdays, Blades hub, I pay on his membership 25p, £1.70 a pint, Footy, raffle and chit chat. Love it and have noticed a big change since going but somewhere I go and escape the usual shit, Everybody is cut from the same cloth in ours which makes for a decent night. Great gaff and the added bonus is Thursday is singles night in the Disco so we see some sights
all still booming round are way, no strippers no more unfortunatly. i never bother with em though because theres plenty of pubs in rotherham that are still less than 2 quid a pint.
The Railway Club near me has just closed after many years. Was an Institution in these parts. My old man,was the Top man for years. Will be looking down from above none too happy. It was only the fitba trade when The Accies were in The SPL which kept it going as long as it did.Still a few others not far away, but as per The West of Scotland there are sectarian undertones in them either side,so fcuk that. Pubs dying off all over due to cheap drink from supermarkets and the recession.Young ones I know find it hard to believe that not so many years ago,you had to queue early doors to get into the decent pubs and social clubs at weekends...unlike now.
my old mans a train driver used to love going to the christmas partys in the railway club as a kid
i drink in the hibs club which is a sort of working mans club my supporters bus leaves from their only £2.30 a pint, good pool tables, jukebox, function hall ect and most importantly a good crowd cant beat it
