Keynes Head in Lace Market for decent beers and OK food. It's a castle rock pub so if you're into your ales you're in luck. The Cross Keys at the top of Byard lane (up past Paul Smith Jeans shop) has changed hands within the last few years and the food in there is excellent and again the beers are good. Dogma down the road from the Keys is a OK bar/club with late license, food ain't all that but the atmosphere is OK. I'm not a huge fan but there's a Jamies Italian on Lower Pavement. Heading to West Bridgeford is a good idea - the Lar wood and Voce is great, as is the Stratford Haven. Never been to restaurants round there but apparently there OK. There's a Pizza Express there too.
In terms of shops, decent independent clothes shops are thin on the ground Sakis closed recently. Flannels is OK as is Thackeries, then you've got both Paul Smith stores which are lovely.
Enjoy.

Spankys is a student gaff but great atmosphere. OK burgers, gets very busy. If you're up that way pop into Rescue Rooms - the place where Jake Bugg got spotted. Decent music but again due to proximity to Trent uni there's lots of students.
