Thinking about getting a small boat for me and my boys to get out together, think I would prefer a sail boat as more to go wrong with a motor boat and to be honest I would of thought it quite boring after a while. Any advice?
I don't have a boat myself though I can see the attraction....be a good bit of bonding between you n your boys to all get out on the water together......sail boat would as you say be more interesting yeah......on days like today it would be great......best of luck
Haven't got one myself, but living on the South Coast know plenty of people that do, i'm guessing as to whether sail or motorised that would all depend on what and where you intending using it...Although alot of sail boats have engines aswell..
on a different note, been toying with buying a narrowboat for a few years now, possibly to live on in the future when the kids have flown the nest. I dont think i could justify just using at the weekend though with the mooring fees etc

They're doing quite a bit of developing certain sites along the forth n Clyde canal near where I live....there's a little harbour at Bowling that's gonna have residential berths at it and I think I read they were after 2k a year fees which is similar to what a static caravan will cost you to have on site........would be a nice way to live I reckon but tbh I'd still like to have the reassurance of bricks n mortar aswell at least for a year or two till I saw how I got on on the high seas

aye i know what you mean, reckon in winter it could be a bit grim but mortgage free you never know
I remember someone telling me, they'd bought a boat, and they had two brilliant days from it in a few years, the day they bought it and the day they sold it.
I work with a lot of ex sailors who have boats and love it but there was a lad who bought a boat with his friend he couldn't swim took it out of Loch Lomand and almost drowned, sold it as soon as possible.
My in-laws own one, just off over there now. It's lovely.
Where there moored there's some Dutch barges that people live on. They look incredible, perfect for when people down size.
Mate of mine did six month on one, sold his flat and renovated a narrow boat, I warned him how cold it gets...he made it through one summer but moved back into a house by November - Baltic!!!
Why add years to your life when you can add life to your years?

Aye not too far away....just up the road in Clydebank...Bowling Harbour is nice if its a good weather day..even better through the week when its quiet.
I'm down in Scumbarton! Work in CBank though, yeah mate had a flat in bowling was nice and mostly dead during the day/night except that road when it's backed up.
I used to own a kayak/canoe when I was 12, used to compete in slalom and long distance events. It always used to be my ambition to have a proper on e though, so that I coud ask the ladies" Would you like to come on my boat?"...
go for it as a kid my old man bought one with is mates have great memories we would sail from the humber a place called paul straight out off the east coast and as far as plymouth to my uncles . also fotunate to spend time with my uncle who was in the services based in belize and spent time on is catamarang sailed to a few islands gulf of mexico as a young lad it was amazing . learnt so much the freedom of the sea cant explain really but its special .if you know wat i mean i would love to buy a boat its in my blood 5th generation merchant seaman i am the only one me and my cousin who have not gone to nautical college and set to sea . as the times changed in my home town i didnt want to go to sea on the trawlers.. personaly i would buy one if i had the funds great experiance be really good for you and youre kids .. however there are many dangers ..the sea commands respect do that and youre safe ...
I'm in Bournemouth, we have loads of rivers around us the sea is a 10 minute walk from our house, I want to offer my boys as much as I can, open them up to different opportunities. Going to get a small boat and see how it goes . Cheers for the replies lads..........happy sailing!

Only time in in Dumbarton these days is to nip to Morrisons or M&S ....nowt much the place really....I know one or two Dumbarton fans who go to all the games (silly boys) ...I've had the unpleasant experience of being stuck on a bus on that road in bad weather,,right from the cut off into Bellsmyre all the way along to the Bowling roundabout...I was on that bus over an hour n a half stuck on that road nose to tail traffic crawling along ...was not a happy camper.....one or two of my mates have had flats in Bowling over the years...nice wee place ...quiet....a nice view from some of the houses out over the river.
