All depends on what you count I suppose i.e. longevity, peak, ball playing CB versus old fashioned defender, etc...

so chaps, who's in your top 5? (and even Mac can take part in this one and nominate Johnny Woodgate ) or Chris Whyte...

been a leeds fan my nomination would be John woodgate..always looked the better one our central defensive pair with duck lips!...others that spring to mind john terry jamp stam and tony adams maybe sol cambel

One that was superb for us for most of his time was Willie gallas. Not necessarily saying he's top 5 but he would certainly be in my strongest Chelsea defence.

Bale? Really? Yes he started at left back but his game became noticed once he moved forward didn't it so I certainly wouldn't class him amongst the best defenders.
