been meaning to make a start on a book which will be a basic murder mystery formula. i actually made a start on it a year ago but accidently got wiped off my laptop after the first 2 chapters. I have recently acquired an old battered Mac G4 12" so i am now having a another crack at it. Anyone here had a go at writing a book, memoirs etc
about 15-16 years ago when i fucked my back and was off work for a few months, i started writing a book, mainly about my experiences going to football and living the way i did, got to around 2 chapters, enjoyed doing it and brought back a load of memories, i will do it again sometime even if its just for my own enjoyment
I loved English at school and one of my biggest regrets is not studying it further. About a year ago I was thinking about getting back into it, mainly because I was looking at being made redundant. Have you done anything else before such as short stories or creative writing?
Got about 84,000 words on the collapse of Britain's monopoly over Iranian oil near enough ready to go. Hopefully be submitting a final draft in the next couple of months.
I was digging through my old man's computer a while back and found he'd started a book on a similar theme to redmond. Was actually a pretty good read, but he was pretty adamant about not taking it any further. My uncle harry's memoirs (unfinished) are something I'm interested in working on in the future. Born one of 7 kids in south london, joined the army at 14, lots of stories about working on the docks in London before eventually being moved out to essex, dancehalls, fashion and fighting etc. Definitely the roots of a good story in there.

Did creative writing in the 6th form many years ago which was rewarding and sent a few blog reviews to a fashion site with limited results. So that's about it. But the way i see it If chopper Read can write a book why can't I. They do say we all have at least 1 book in us.
Not looking to make a million and will probably end up putting it out for free once completed. Just have a good idea based on the whodunit genre. I worked out roughly that it is going to take between 1-2 years to finish. E books and E publishing has made things easier than ever for people to write books.
Think your're absolutely right about the DIY publishing part, if that's how it turns out. Huge amount of shit books published all the time by "established publishers" ... The most important thing is that you are true to your project and follow your instincts (but "kill your darlings" is always sound advice - murder mystery or not ;)
I used to both write and read lots myself some years ago. Never amounted to much though (except minor alcoholism perhaps). Had a couple of meetings with some editors at a publishing company about a collection of shortstories, but the cunts ended up rejecting it in its original form eventually and suggested I should rework and rewrite the whole shit into a childrens book. So I fucked off. Still wonder if that was clever or not, but it never felt right. Gave myself a 10-15 years brake from it anyway (minus the drinking).
