Going to Rome in a couple of weeks, and just wondering if any of you know some nice places to go. Never been to Italy before, so don't have a clue what to expect( Except for the famous tourist-attractions).
Romes one big tourist attraction mate! Something round every corner you will recognise from t.v. It's a fascinating city though, no modern skyscrapers glossy towers, the ancient world sits right alongside everyday modern life. If you like football it's worth a trip out to the Olympic stadium to watch Roma or lazio, fantastic stadium by the Tiber.loads of high end shops round Spanish steps including a stone island store if that's your thing. I enjoyed eating and drinking al fresco and watching those lovely roman ladies stroll by! It's a great city hope you enjoy it.
Spanish Steps are shit. Just some er...steps. it's where all the high end shops are so your good lady will love it round here. Trevi fountain is worth a look. Gets packed here so beware of pickpockets. There used to be a Paul & Shark shop here on the corner, If thats your thing. Get yourself one of them tourist passes for the bus. hop on and off at all the sights. My Missus was dissapointed with the Colosseum. She thought it would look just like it did in that film with Russel Crowe, the daft cow. There is/was a shop on via nazionale that sells/sold CP, SI and Belstaff etc. Get yourself off into the side streets away from the tourist areas. Eat where the locals eat. Loads better value for money. Take in a game if you can. Finally, get yourself off to have a look inside the Vatican. Then shake your head in anger every time the catholic church asks for money for the poor.
Get yourself on an organised tour and actually find out the history behind all the great buildings. We did a walking tour round the centre with a bus that took us to the Collesium and a few other places. Probably my favourite city in Europe, as said before something round every corner. Shopping not what it used to be 15-20 years ago when you could find back street shops full of Left Hand and old SI. Same everywhere really now we have the internet.
Love the city. I was there a couple of years ago celebrating my mums 50th and i still remember walking into one of the larger churches and in the side of it there was a service going on. They had a choir singing salms in latin and although im not religious or anything i was close to tears. Never heard anything like this 50 person choir going at it in a huge room like that one. Everything around stopped and everyone was just aweing that choir. I can only hope for people to experince similar cause it was beautiful
They've done studies, you know. 60% of the time it works, every time.
My favorite city by far, Rome. No other place struck me like Rome. And if sunny, there is no other place you would want to be in. For the start, if you arrive at Fiumicino airport, you can get to the city either by train (which is a little cheaper) or by vans. The tax you 15euro/person up to your hotel address and if you want you can talk to the guy to come pick you up when you are leaving Rome. If you arrive on Ciampino. you can take either a pullman for about 4euro/person and have you dropped off at Termini or you can choose different buses to drop you off at Termini or at the underground end of line. If you plan to use the underground a lot, then get that tourist ticket that someone else also mentioned about - around 11 euro for 3 days. Sites to see? Well, pretty ,much everything, as the city is a marvelous monument of ancient history. Go to the monuments, walk through all the "piazze". The night scene lasts up to 2 - 3 am, afterward you'll see just a few people on the streets. Trastevere is a nice place at night,as well during the day, with people hanging out in and out the pubs, sitting in the squares ans so on. For a night out you could also try Testaccio, not too far from Trastevere, but i never hanged out there so i can't say how it is. Have an eye on pocket thieves, i remember as i was on the subway train on my way to the Colosseum right when it opened the doors a thieve little cunt took something from an asian tourist. If you are in for shopping, you will find pretty much everything on Via Corso. As stated above, the P&S shop is still at Piazza Fontana di Trevi while the SI shop right on Via del Babuino, which leads straight to Piazza di Spagna. Also, do eat where the locals eat, there are a lot of places where the cooks aren't italian, and it would be best to avoid. Right before Fontana di Trevi, on the right is a very nice Italian restaurant and have amazing italian cooked dishes, but i can't get to remember the name now. The people are very well dressed, most certainly you'll spot some well geared casuals. Lots of beautiful ladies, locals and tourist, and easy to start a chat with. You'll definitely enjoy Rome!
