City of god, Sin Nombre, La Haine, and A Prophet... I watched these thinking I wouldnt enjoy them as much as I did, I'd say A Prophet is probably one of my favourite films now as well
I was just about to say how weird it was that no one had mentioned this. A fucking classic, what a movie.
I would also recommend you Armadillo, a danish documentary released in late 2010. It was subject to much controversy, firstly because the army allowed a film crew to join the troops and film everything, and secondly because of the footage they got back with. It basically shows how ridiculous the war is, and how hard it is for young men to cope with it. Received several awards worldwide and was a succes when it was showed at the BFI film festival this year.

La Haine is one of my favourite films, foreign or otherwise. Watched Armadillo and thought it was excellent, very much my cup of tea
Gommorah -Great film, prefer my world cinema films, more will come to me
Antonio La Torre used to see him around Aberdeen - used to eat in his restaurants now and again. Think his family are involved in book/film. Not seen i t- have to check it out.
Gomorrah, great film but read the book, it will literally blow your mind as to how far-reaching the organised crime of The Camorra is. They make the Sicilian lot look small-time. And that is their genius, they don't want recognition, just the proceeds of their 'work'.
City of God is a must-see. Based on a real story and all the actors were from the Brazilian favelas. Superb. Cinema Paradiso is another great shout. Absolutely love that film!
big fan of foreign film, will return to thread but watched a cracker this week The Secret in Their Eyes Argentenian film on Sky anytime, great story spanning a 30year period covering the investigation of a rape and murder case. Got crime, mystery, love story, some darkness, corruption, good characters, thriller all thrown into the mix, great ending as well
