Got a 42 and a 46 LCD's one Sony and the other Samsung and great pics on both. Mate has a 46 Plasma Panasonic and I can't tell the difference although Plasma is supposed to be better. LCD will last longer and I was told the Hertz counts. The higher the better. Another mate has a LED and TBH it is below what I have for picture although he got it nearly 2 years ago now and it cost a fortune. Hope that helps.

whats the room size ? where is the tv going on a stand or wall ? is there direct ceiling light or sunlight going to be on it ? what do you currently have that you are replacing ? we was going for a big screen ourselves but went for a stand mounted 37" led backlit as the 42" plasma with the lighting in the room coming from the wrong angles would of made it shit ! even though it was a bigger screen the lighting in the room from downligh spotlights would of interfered with the vision you could say it would of been like buying a pair of gucci trainers... look good on the shelf but shit when on .... look into it took us 5 weeks to get one i got really confused but got there in the end http://www.oledbuyingguide.com/oled-tv-a...-plasma-tv.html
Of course, I know nothing about TVs so this could look good but actually be technically poor.
I have one of those samsung lcd's in the link, paid over 900 for it a couple of years ago and am still very happy with it. Have a look at a tv with freeview hd in it and if you have a satalite dish also freesat built in. I'm happy with the lcd, have looked at a few led's and not that impressed with them tbh.
LED tvs tend to be nice and bright but not great for football or fast moving pictures as I think the most you can get just now is 200hz, the main advantage is their a lot thinner than standard lcd and plasma
LCD nots better than plasma and vice versa it just depends on the tv make sure it is full hd 1080p and not 720 p and at least 400hz refresh rate and it should be a good quality picture
