Thinking of getting one .. Kids / Wifes initials , twirly swirly type writing , with initials overlapping each other , on the side of my neck ... but im torn wether to get it , as may really regret it being on my neck ..
I personally wouldnt get one purely because it seems to have become the place to have a tattoo, Have tattoos on my hands and thats the only part exposed I would go. Have lots of friends with the " Made in " tattoos on back of neck, Yeah its not the same place, just imo could regret it. Have personal tattoos somewhere special and discreet. less is more with emotionally attached tattoos for me..
I've got my lower neck (in work) on both sides and its a matter of time before I get the more exposed upper neck if it makes sense.
As far jobs.... in graphic design I may have a bit of more luck due to its somewhat relaxed environment.
Also have one hand tattoo and just waiting for the right moment to get them fully done. But then again my arm sleeves and chest/ribs are done so its a natural progression.

See what you're saying but I think they look good as part of a bigger piece, maybe coming from your chest/shoulders. Not for me as I said but can look good with the right design behind it
When I got my neck done it was still a bit not accepted, I just didn't want people I didn't know talking to me. Now that it's so popular I do. Got the face ones and they still talk to me, I can't win.

A good tattoo will look good anywhere. Including the neck.
Quality is everything.
I'm only speaking from what I've come across to be fair and the recipients of the neck tattoos I've seen have always been the type of blokes you avoid. The type that sticks a glass in your face at the bar because you 'looked at his bird'.
That's not to say all people who have neck tattoos are that sort of person because that would be bollocks, but because of the associations I have from a personal point of view is the reason I've always disliked them.
Its a very bold move imo, dont get me wrong I have a few tattoos, but I think the neck can be to much a friend from school had one and said it had changed the path of his life, his words, but they are more excepted these days, just put alot of thought into it .its there for life
Don't like the swirly name jobs you see on loads of peoples necks personally. If its part of a design that goes further down the body then they're passable
