Specialized and Trek are good entry level mtb mate. I know your thinking of going through your work, but it might be worth checking out the bay as you can pick some good deals up on there.
As T says, you can get a specialized Hardrock for around £300.Marin is a good shout aswell.
Check out gumtree, plenty of bargains about.

That's what I've got (I think), you may be better going for a hybrid though depending on how off-road you want to go
