Quote by soul_stylistThought it was pretty dreadful if I'm honest, apart from that gorgeous soul record just before the end - Can't for the life of me remember who it's by but it's haunting! Anyone help me out?
It's a 3 hour film as such so is unlikely to get to a climax just yet. As I saw it it was setting the scene and slowly letting us into what has happened in the last 2 years as a result of Lol's affair with Milky and her killing her abusive father. As it's on over 3 nights I think Shane Meadows can get away with it evolving slowly as we don't have to wait a week to catch up on it. Always brilliant music on This Is England.
Just read that back and I'm sorry if I sound like a TV critic in the Guardian.

I wouldn't bother unless you watch '86 mate. Too much went on.

Is this with that kelly bird in it? Wouldn't mind watchin it then.
Serious question: Is the oft derided Channel 4 now the last bastion for (and of) working class entertainment on terrestrial TV? Aunty or ITV wouldn't touch dramas like This is England or programme like Shameless.
Wasn't Channel 4 programming always a bit close to the bone to an extent? Remember even Brookie dealing with some touchy subjects drugs, racism, incest and domestic violence, Territory where most other soaps probably wouldn't even go. I quite like a lot of the stuff they show, Dispatches being one, More 4 is also excellent.

I agree with the spirit of that. Channel 4 seems to have come full circle and is now again producing brilliant and unconventional drama. However if by 'working class entertainment' you mean only to be watched by the working classes I'd disagree. If you mean drama about working class folk, that's an interesting point. I'll back to you on that.

I mean the latter....would be a grim world if working class folk watch Channel 4 and fuck all else!
I thought it captured working class growing up superbly, caught all 3 episodes last night and I thought it was so much better than 86, it was grim but it hit on the topics that hit home with growing up I thought.
In my opinion it's time this was put to bed, the idea is good and the film was superb. I like British film making makes the American stuff drivvle. There is a Glasgow based film "My name is Joe" by Pete Mullen which has very loose connections into this but is far superior, the way it ended last night we are sure to get This is England 90!!! The scenes in the 86 series were harrowing nad I'm surprised the watchdog let them go, however this type of film appeals to a certain audience like us.

Don't agree mate that its time to put it to bed its improving every episode why stop now think the 90s had enough cultural interests to make another good episode.
and for "my name is joe" behave mate it looks shocking not a good comparison
The gems in the eye shine in the most irrelevant places but then again in the relevant impartially.
I've found that the problem most people have with it is that it's too realistic. Thought '88 was a vast improvement on '86 (which I still enjoyed). Shane Meadows really is a fantastic filmmaker. I don't think I've ever disliked any of his work.
