Re OP - I went across Europe on my bike alone. If you can sit in a pub or restaurant on your own at home, you're laughing when you're away. You'll meet loads of people, you're more interesting and less intimidating to others on your own.

I took a 4 month break from work about 10 years ago, packed a bag and fucked off to New Zealand. Best thing I ever did in terms of travelling. Met loads of people, some of which I'm still in touch with. Recommend it!

ye i went to New York 5/6 years ago in the October break. i think city breaks you get away with but you look billy no mates on a beach holiday Id imagine. What would you do sit at the bar every night yourself in the hope of finding a group to tag along with. Not for me
Go for a big city break and youd be fine for a week tops! New York is perfect for this,do the usual site seeing stuff and shops to get lost in for days!aint bad way to spend a few days
