Not my prefered city in Italy. Nothing really impressive but you'll feel the typical atmosphere of a port city. Went to Retro Restaurant and Trattoria Rosmarino which were really nice. Didn't find anything interesting shopping wise. Never managed to watch their nice derby game: shame as it's a must see in the Griffoni end! Loved going down south close to La Spezia to have a lunch at Cinque Terre (about 100km away). Wouldn't spend a whole week there but Genova is a cool stop before going to Toscania :)

thank you for the info....did you get the train anywhere ? fancy going to either Bologna or Florence for the day.
Dirty old river, must you keep rolling, Flowing into the night.......
Will try my best to go to Bologna this summer : never visited the red city yet. But it looks nice too! Florence is a must see and the Curva Fiesole in the early 90s was a pleasure to visit at that time! Sienna and Verona not far away are lovely places too... Never took a train in Italy, driving in the italian countryside is nicer I think :)

The trains in Italy are excellent and not to expensive. If you need more information PM, with some questions.
flying out on saturday and staying for week, plan to do Portofino etc.
PM on the way

Was there in 1990 and thought it felt a bit less well off than a lot of other Italian cities, there was a good episode on 'Two Fat Italians' which you can see on bbc i-player which covers Genoa and the food mainly, excellent programme. Don't remember much shopping wise there though. The ground is excellent
Florence and Bologna both excellent in their own ways. Plenty of good shops in Florence, Bologna one of the foodie centres of Italy
San Remo another good alternative, stayed there for a week before really good place to relax and good little independent shops too
Train travel is generally very good throughout Italy
