It isn't a myth that it happened over 14 years of Labour government. While the global recession isn't directly Labours fault the over spending was and that is now part of the problem here in this country.
Labour's spending only became unsustainable once the recession had taken hold. For the first 6 year of their governance Britain was running a budgetary surplus. For the next 4 the figures were comparable to the Tories from 1990 onwards and lower than most European countries. While I don't know where you got your figures from they should have reduced spending as soon as it became unsustainable instead of spending money the country didn't have. Incompetence springs to mind but they had to keep their voters happy in public sector jobs the country couldn't afford so they would be voted back in.

As for what Labour got wrong, put simply loads the reason being they took the bait left by thatcher and went to the right and forgot what they're meant to be about i.e. representing ordinary British people. I'd hope that being in opposition would allow for the reassessment of their goals. Regarding your individual points: overspend is a myth (figures below), mass immigration I agree with you, the benefits system point is also a myth (look at how successive governments have massaged unemployment/benefit figures, also have you ever tried living on benefits? its a fucking nightmare), the banking collapse has its roots well into the past and was endemic of an international problem and the Iraq war was I agree an utter disaster, albeit one that the Tories were only to happy to agree to.

Dont see paedos handing there passports in and reporting during school holidays ? Dont think coppers are following paeds around at weekends . They tried to paper over the massive cracks by spending billions making out every thing was fine to the voters. They should have done what is being done now or similar not pampering to voters to stay in power. Look at the figures again. prior to 2008 the deficit at no point went over £42,399 - under the previous Tory administration it went over this figure on at least two occasions - spending increased after the banking collapse at which point the government took appropriate measures (matched across the world) to prevent total meltdown. Can you explain why budgetary cuts are encessary and provide any examples of a nation cutting its way out of the current economic malaise - only one country in europe is managing it in Europe right now BTW

you're wrong, from 1990 to 2007 Germany ran a budget deficit. to suggest they lived under 'austerity' for over 15 years is just incorrect.

I'd disagree about picking the wrong brother (David is tainted by being so close to Blair and at least Ed will listen to voices from outwit the Party manchurians). I'm confused by your other statement though - should Labour have started cutting pre-global economic crisis or during? If the latter then I'd suggest that would have led to public outcry (justifiably so) and if the latter I'd suggest that we'd end up like Argentina at the turn of the last decade - on the streets and in need of unprecedented IMF assistance. if you can find one legitimate economist who can illustrate why cutting in times of economic unrest is the right approach then I'll be amazed.
