Not just because I support Villa but he's right isn't he? Nearly every Premier League and Championship club put out weakened teams in the first few rounds. If you're still in the cup at the last 16 it's then that clubs take it seriously. Even with Villa's small squad Lambert will rest players to save them for Arsenal the week after. From a fans perspective a day at Wembley is an amazing experience, I'm fortunate to have seen Villa play there but as we all know these days it's not about the fans it's about making sure the club gets the millions every year from being in the Premier League.
Lambert - Ex Norwich Knob wouldnt expect anything else (probably still having nightmares about cup competitions with the Bradford debacle last year).!!
Be careful what you dream of it may come up and surprise you.
Oh and by the way, I'd probably give anything to go and watch Walsall play at a big ground in the FA cup.....I suppose we'll just have to do with League one games at Wolves for a few years....haha

Couldn't agree more, don't give a shit about the "prem", have my ticket for the game against Burnley tomorrow, the first game of the season i've gone to...
I remember back to late 70's & 80's football , can't recall playing weekened teams then , shows the money side of football is all that matters , if they lose then it's no big deal , gone out carry on focusing on the league - they inline to win the league ? no .. winnning games in the cup also builds moral , and that winning feeling .. middle to lower half of the league year in year out ? or silverware ? know what I'd prefer ..
We're all speaking as fans and the glory that a day at Wembley brings. I think in Lambert's case he has Faulkener the Chief Exec and Lerner the Owner who would also love a day out at the Cup Final but they know the way the club is run from a financial point of view they have to be in the Premier League which is why Cup games will always come second. As a player Lambert's greatest achievement was winning the Champions League not staying in the top flight, so he knows all about glory but his priority now is keeping Villa in the Premier League.
I don't think a cup run will be the deciding factor in whether a club stays in the league. A cup run can boost confidence and keep the fans on your side.
Modern football is shit I've been to 2 games over the festive period forked out a fortune & I feel sorry for people going to watch there club & seeing a weakened team put out in the fa cup,I can see both sides off the coin but however if you are paying good money you want to see your best players fielded.

Fully agree taking my boys to see Ipswich v Preston tomo in the 3rd round, Town realise the gates going to be shit so dropped prices to £15 adults and £3 kids, otherwise a day for the 3 of us with travelling, food etc is normally £100 which for championship football is ridiculous. McCarthy will fill the team with Wolves reserves tomo no doubt!

That day didn't end well. A few of the Flinstones got nicked and the game all but relegated us too. Think there's 6k going tomorrow, so the magic of the cup still exists (for those of us in the pub league anyway). Sure I can always pick a fight down the local if I get nostalgic about pissing blood for a week
Unfortunately I agree with him with regards to the 'big clubs'. A lot of us can remember when the FA cup final was the highlight of the season and all that went with it. But things change and like it or not for the bigger clubs it has become an annoying hindrance.
despite all the success since, being at Wembley in 97 still ranks right up there for me, possibly only Munich ahead of it. Will never forget looking around our end at full time.....will remember it until my death bed.
if anyone was serious about rescuing the FA cup, they'd make it the 4th CL place for the winners. But power, money and politics wont ever let that happen. sad state of affairs especially if youre one of the older lads who grew up on Cup final days [frown]
"The nightmares invading the sleep of Bayern fans involve four horsemen of the Champions League Apocalypse riding towards them. As the faces come into focus, they will recognise Frank Lampard, Cole, Petr Cech and Drogba. All were immense..."
How can it be a hindrance when the likes of Man U,Man City,Chelsea could easily play a strong team that would beat most teams in the premier league never mind the lower leagues,

Because whether we like it or not football is about money nowadays and nothing else. The prize money for winning the FA cup is £1.8M this year and fourth place in the premier league nets you about £40M from the champions league. Now if your paying footballers £200,000 grand a week then you can see what the priorities are.
Yeah final only at Wembley. I think teams still in champions league/premier league title race the fa cup is maybe a hindrance. As for Lambert he's doing a shitty job at villa, and should be pleased he's still employed.
