Doves hit a pinnacle a few years back. Saw them headline the second stage at Glasto and it was rammed! I'm a bit of a Campag Velocet nut but wouldn't count them as under-rated as the NME was fluffing them for months.
Can't really think of many under-rated recent bands, most tend to be hyped so much that they're selling out arenas after one album.
I always thought the Dandy Warhols were under-rated then they had that Vodafone advert thing and went massive for 5 minutes
Yes! The Music are spot on. Had many a sweaty night at their gigs. Think Rob's on the new Mike Skinner single He's just not the same since lopping all his hair off
Zitat von mopfloydLove the Dandys man...Good shout. Godless,Mohamed, and Nietzsche IMO 3 of the strongest songs to start any album.
Doesn't get much better. Horse Pills and Shaking both really good tracks too. Been listening to the ...Come Down album recently, some great tracks on there too.
Always meant to see that documentary about them and Brian Jonestown Massacre
Yes they have been round for years and get a lot of kudos but have kept themselves away from the media spotlight and are always spoken about in lesser terms than the other bands of that time / era. Brilliant band, brilliant live act.
Somebody mentioned The Bees earlier, saw them for the 1st time supporting Weller a few weeks back, meant to check them out further.
The Charlatans have got to be one of the most unlucky bands ever.Never really got their dues, management issues and the death of Rob Collins sure didn't help.
okay, given my preference is heavy rock, I'm going with a band who, as it happens, is my favourite band. They're called Y&T and it's doubtful any of you will have heard of them. Anyways, Y&T have been going since 1974 and never made it big mainly due to a combination of bad luck and bad timing. Back in the early 80's they were on the edge of breaking through - to give you an idea Van Halen, Gun's n Roses and Motely Crue all opened for them. The story goes that Gene Simmons (of Kiss fame) went to watch them with a view to signing a record deal but ended up signing Van Halen who was supporting them. Not as you would expect on the basis of Eddie Van Halens guitar playing (as Dave Meniketti of Y&T is a fantastic guitarist as well) but primarily due to Dave Lee Roths charismatic display. So the Rock scene in the US moved into the 'hair' metal era and bands needed to have a photogenic frontman - hence why Motley Crue, Poison etc... all made it big whilst Y&T clamoured for the big breakthrough. Dave Meniketti, whilst lead guitar, lead singer and song writer - being photogenic wasn't his forte lets just say.... When the mid 80's and rock moved towards a harder edged sound a la Metallica and ditched the hair metal nonsense, Y&T's music wasn't 'hard' edged enough to compete with thrash metal and the likes and thus the breakthrough still didn't come. When grunge came and Rock/Metal became distinctly uncool they'd missed the boat. However, they kept going, releasing the odd album and in the mid noughties they started playing to packed houses around the US and then europe. They now tour annually and play gigs such as Londons GAYE or Nottinghams Rock City to sell-outs. The played Belfast for the first time ever in 2009 after constant badgering from me and similar others and it was a sell-out and an absolutely extraordinary gig. The reception from the fans was unreal. Their finest hour was probably supporting AC/DC on the Hells Bells (I think) tour in the early 80's. Now in rock folklore, as support act, they blew AC/DC away in Dublin in 1984 in a gig which launched a big following. I've spoken to loads of people who were there in Dublin who said it must be the only time people walked out of an AC/DC gig talking about the support act.....I've had the pleasure of meeting the band numerous times and not only superb live even after 36 years but they are the nicest bunch of fellas you could meet.
Ladies and Gentlemen......Y&T
"The nightmares invading the sleep of Bayern fans involve four horsemen of the Champions League Apocalypse riding towards them. As the faces come into focus, they will recognise Frank Lampard, Cole, Petr Cech and Drogba. All were immense..."
Mate check out the early albums - Earthshaker, Black Tiger, Meanstreak and In Rock We Trust.
Songs such as Lonely Side of Town, Dirty Girl, Meanstreak, Midnight in Tokyo, Forever and Rescue Me. For a couple of epic slower numbers try Winds of Change and I Believe in You which is simply a stunning song live.
I'd put Dave Meniketti on a power with Gary Moore when it comes to Guitar playing but maybe I'm biased
