Quote by RamseesCFCFIFA has backed down? Shame that - an organisation with such honour and integrity too.......
So.......I wonder which FIFA member England have the dirt on, then?....
Well, they have agreed to let them have a poppy on their black armbands so not a total capitulation.
Some bloke was on Sky news earlier talking about this poppy business. He was talking about how "poppy fascism" had taken hold in Britain and in a sense he was right. You never see anyone on the BBC or SKY without a poppy. If you are not wearing one someone will run over and pin one to you before the camera rolls apparently. I wear my poppy with pride and always have done but it is my decision to wear one and I don't judge or look down on anyone who doesn't wear a poppy.
All those men who made the ultimate sacrifice so that we could live in freedom and now the poppy fascists basically dictate that you should wear one. Ironic.
good article from Martin Samuel today making this point - how it had became very contrived in some respects. Basically, how it used to be, you buy your poppy/poppies, stick them on a jacket, sometime you'll wear a different jacket and forget to move it on. So, for a day, you've no poppy in. Yet now there's a stewards inquiry almost if that happens. Of all the MP's only Ken Clarke didn't have a poppy in at Parliament the other day. as for not wearing them, I'm one of the few in our floor in work with one on. The reasons for that lie much deeper than people forgetting to put one on.....
"The nightmares invading the sleep of Bayern fans involve four horsemen of the Champions League Apocalypse riding towards them. As the faces come into focus, they will recognise Frank Lampard, Cole, Petr Cech and Drogba. All were immense..."
in my humble opinion because of the confilcts around the world and the amount of service men and women getting injured the more people that wear one the better so it brings it to the attention of the younger generation.
But why would the younger generations forget? You learn about the wars from a very young age. Weaing a poppy for 10 days won't make much of a difference.

Quote by VasqueBut why has it become imperative to wear poppies on football shirts in the last couple of years? No one did it even five years ago and yet now it's a disgrace if you don't.
I dont think its imperative its just a sign of respect Glasgow Rangers have won one on their top for years. As for wearing poppies, like you i always wear one but dont look down on people who do not

Well I wouldn't know about Rangers because I don't follow Scottish football but them aside it is a relatively new idea to wear poppies on football shirts. Why wasn't this done twenty years ago? Are you saying because football clubs didn't have poppies on their shirts years ago they were being disrespectful?

I think you are misinterpreting what i am saying. No i`m not saying the clubs are disrespectful because they did not have poppies on their shirts years ago its just a mark of respect & also i think it raises awareness of the Poppy Appeal. I was at Ibrox last sat for the game & although i do not normally buy replica shirts i bought one from the club shop which has a poppy on it.The armed forces come on at half time & were given an standing ovation by the Rangers fans.

Spot on. The line about carrying on that two-year old tradition made me laugh. There is more hoo-ha about wearing/not wearing one and frankly it's fucking embarrassing. And those EDL prats make it even more so.
My opinion is that I will always wear a poppy, but wouldn't chastise anyone for not doing so. I've noticed that a good cross section of society wear one though.
This will be the 37th time England have played between November 1st and November 15th since 1918. In 93 years, they've never felt the need for a poppy on their shirts/kit.

Same as the minutes silences last week cos there are no top two division games. If you've no game on the weekend don't do it, otherwise it looks contrived. There's a horrible industry in this country based on enforced emotion.

It's not that long ago that no teams in the Premiership had poppies on their shirts. This is the poppy fascism that has been mentioned earlier and the campaign by the idiots at the Daily Mail to force clubs to have them.

Your just on a line because one of the afor mentioned clubs just happens to be the said same team whose colours you are wearing as you type out your posts.
germans offended? i think the most of my people dont even know about the poppy or even its meaning... didnt know about it before i joined found, always wondered about that red flower on the managers collar (at football games)... shame we havent something similar. soldiers die in afghanistan and nobody seems to care...

Spot on, it's orchestrated sentiment like Princess Diana, Madeline in Portugal etc Prove you care by crying on television but doing nothing about real issues in society like poverty and giving the youth a future. Think of the tools involved in the campaign Cameron, 'Wills', the FA. Scoundrels and hypocrites to a man.
I take heart in the fact that none of my relatives or acquaintances who served give a hoot if John Terry or his mates are wearing a poppy, rather they're too busy enjoying their lives. Let the wallies crack on; wouldn't surprise me to see a Jeremy Kyle show next year: 'My Sister's Boyfriend Doesn't Wear A Poppy And I Want Her To Disown Him', that's how bastardised it is now.
