completely wrong there Niall, there was loads of poppies on view in my local town over the weekend and that's a relatively small provincial town. I take it you've never heard of the annual Remembrance Sunday event at Island Bridge?
Shouldn't be forgotten that tens of thousands of Irish people from the Republic and the Nationalist tradition died in the Great War.
And Glenn - great post. Fair play.
Colm
I wasn't denying people wear them, just personally I have honestly never seen one. I'm from the North originally and where I came from people did not wear them, it was an ordinary town, not untouched by the troubles by any means but not what any person would ever call a republican town. People simply did not wear them, still don't.
I live in Dublin now and don't see people on the street with them and of course I am aware of Island Bridge. Bit daft to suggest I am not to be honest.
Interestingly there was articles in the Indo at the weekend about this, the right of people to wear them if they want whic I agree with. Equally so however if people don't want to wear them that is their decision, it is not to show disrespect to anybody or the significance of the poppy which is what some people on here are accusing McLean of.
It has been correctly pointed out by another lad that McLean would or could have got a shitstorm of abuse had he worn one so he's in a no win situation.
The simple fact that people are criticising him for not wearing one shows how fucked up the whole thing is.
Quote: ryan wrote in post #60The british army murdered a number of unarmed men in this guy's hometown. A crime which the UK only apologised for two years ago (it happened in 72).
The poppy remembers all British soldiers that have passed. Some of those that shot the members of his community might be included in that, they might not, regardless the guy is hardly going to associate himself with the appeal.
i suggested (on Osti) that this may have been the case, and the reason why he never wore the poppy..........i was shot down in flames and the thread descended into all sorts of bollox about the IRA ...Celtic fans and numerous other stupid comments.....it was pathetic.........if you dont want to wear a poppy dont wear one.....if someone else doesnt like that then thats just tough fuking luck.

This is the reason I enjoy Off Hand so much, people actually debate matters without referring to 'banter'. The other place is more or less an old firm forum at times, it seems to influence every discussion.
Shane Ferguson is also from Derry and he never had a problem wearing one but all this is getting away from the original question which was is James McLean the only footballer to refuse to wear one

Because he didn't fucking want to? Get over yourself, it's a personal choice and James McLean Personally decided not to.
You come across as the type who'd cause a rammy in an empty house.
Would you wear a Lily at Easter time for Ireland's dead? I'm gonna take an educated guess at no, is it a problem, no.
I think Im clever but not clever enough to play with the proper lads, not got the brain span to run with decent folk but i keep trying and trying. shame my prospects are shit and I feel low about myself. I will find my own way one day.
fifa tried to stop england wearing poppies but PM and prince william intervened. I can't understand myself why fifa tried to stop it. It should be down to personel choice.
Quote: Dempsey wrote in post #84Ncfc it was only a question out of interest and if I had of thought it was going to descend into this I wouldn't have asked ok you helmet
Have a word with yourself. Calling people on an internet forum helmets and gobshites is pathetic.

Quote: Dempsey wrote in post #90So it's alright for people to call me and for me not to respond ? Don't think so
Two wrongs don't make a right, Dempsey.
Who gives a shite about James McClean and what he does or doesn't do? He's just a footballer. The vast majority of the country wouldn't know him from adam.

in ww1 The number of Irish deaths in the British Army recorded by the registrar general was 27,405, a casualty rate of 14%,
should wear a poppy for them... i do and anybody else who made the ultimate sacrifice
Eye's right, skin back tight, bollocks to the front, we're the boy's who make more noise when we're on the cunt, we're the riders of the night, and we'd rather fuck than fight, we're the riders of the Clock end Highbury
I wear a poppy but many members of the general public choose not to. Why are people singling out a footballer who did likewise? The overexposure of football in the media, which has got more and more tedious as the years have gone by, that's why.
I couldn't care less if McLean or any other footballer didn't wear a poppy.
Quote: Dempsey wrote in post #96Starting a new topic of which you said no one gives a shite but yet your commenting all the time,so lets just drop it hugo
All the time?
I posted to say that I thought it was daft to trade insults on here.
I've mentioned McLean twice. On the first occasion I asked why people give a shite what McLean does or doesn't do. On the second occasion I said that I couldn't care less what he does.
