I suppose this will go down as drunken shite thread (it deserves to in all honesty). Seems like we are a dying breed. Born in a council house (yep in them days it happened) and wouldn't have it any other fucking way. I loved my estate and fought for it at the local fair on the Georges playing field as a teen. Two council estates fighting at the travelling fair every August on the Waltzers for supremacy. The winners got to stand on the ride. This battle went on in and around the fair and local park every August. Knicking from the stalls on the fair......bags of coconuts, air rifles with bent barrels...
Feel a bit stupid posting this but what the fuck.....glad to be a council estate boy. Talent.
Fuck all wrong with that mate....I was brought up on the wybourn Estate in Sheffield, a right rough hole, as the Sheffield lads on here can vouch for......I loved it!
helps mould who you are Andy. nothin wrong at all mate. I grew up on the Newtownards road and sydenham estate, both in east Belfast. tough places, not much money about and Belfast was a dark place then but I wouldn't change a thing about it. a few things I.'ve learned. the sense of community in those places were second to none. and having worked in a university for the last 9 years, my upbringing an many of those I know from similar share a respect an manners in how to deal with and treat people. I've been surprised at how many from an obviously more privileged background who don't seem to have such principles. generalisation I know but just my experience.

Dragged up on a council estate myself mate, the old fella worked in a foundry all his life, whilst the old lady bought up 4 kids. All my mates were much the same as me, funny but some off the lads I know well now came from different estates and in those days you hated each other.

Even better if you can be proud of where you're at as well.
The first house I lived in had an outside bog - I moved out at 3 so don't remember much. Recall my Dad shouting down the kitchen sink plug hole to Mum.

I work for one of the largest social housing providers in Wales(councils transferred all the stock to new housing associations with tenants on the board). Tenants have a vote on our entire budget and we try to put as much back into the area, the current 'everything for nothing' generation couldn't give a fuck. It's the older lot that are pushing everything through. The sense of community you're all talking about, doesn't really exist anymore. Sad to see.

I remember when we got a bathroom put in our house. I stared at it like it was e.t. ffs

you're right mate. I'm lucky now that I've 3 great neighbours but back then, people weren't just neighbours, they were/became friends. and not just your immediate neighbours either. a million miles away from how life is now.

It still exists on council estates but in small doses and with families who have lived there for a long time. People come and go constantly these days due to evictions so any community spirit is lost.

We get hundred calls a day now 'my neighbour looked at me funny, I want to report ASB', 'girl across the road has her boyfriend living there and they haven't told the social', etc
We're currently upgrading all our properties. New bathrooms, kitchens, rewiring, central heating, roofs, blah blah. Older lot couldn't be anymore grateful while the younger they are the more the expect. Look at this before and after, madness.
Stupid thread my arse, It it fact that thats where most of the lads who I have grown up getting to know from all over where born on one, I had a constant battle with a geezer from Middleton who claimed he was from the biggest council estate in Europe when I assumed it was Bransholme, My roots and I was dragged up, you was taught respect, You learned fast or died quickly, It was gung hoo, Would have it no other way and I portray a very dark side in the Northern Monkeys book what Bransholme was really like, An amazing place, all the dressers in Hull surfaced from the slums cause we had nothing. Same with the constant gang rivalry which spilled into clubs. I was distraught when told the place I was born had been knocked down, Had to sit for nearly half a day opposite just crushed at not having somewhere where I had experienced so much, Jees there were some smart bastards around these parts and every estate I have visited for whatever reason always tucked away were geezers, proper salt of the earth characters. I came to Sheffield and laughed at Pitsmoor and Parsons Cross when folk these areas were tough. Will never forget my days and love going back to see my Dad.
Council estater myself too. Although we bought our council house when I was about 13.
Though our particular estate is not that bad now. Most of the past problems centered around drugs and some neaby flats, but since their demolition, this has gone. I'd say about 50% on our street own their house now which generally makes it better as well.
I think everyone is proud of the upbringing they had, be it working class or middle to upper class. I read recently someone's view that there is no class system anymore but I think it's been heavily brought back into place the past few years. The one thing I've always said though is growing up having nothing will make you always appreciate what you get in the future and I'm glad I have that. I continuously work at things not to better myself but to better my family and enjoy the ride I have to take to get there.
The one thing I will say is that when I'm at parties I know what kind of party I'm at by the people there and I'm glad I had the upbringing I did to be able to fit into any circle. It's character building but things are very different now growing up to when most of us grew up, and I don't want that for my daughters.
