You could pick up a nice 320d bmw on that budget and still have a few quid left mate, the golf and a3 are pretty much the same car as far as engine and running gear go
Looking to sell my golf 1.8T,it,s due mot and tax, needs a timing belt change, exhaust is blowing, electric windows work when they feel like it,needs a couple of tyres, headlight bulb,no brake lights,a meer snip at £9,999.50p,let me know if your interested
We're currently selling a Mini Cooper S, £6.5k if you're interested :)
But otherwise, you won't go far wrong with a Golf. Coupe's are for girls, BMWs are expensive (run flats are a rip off). Audi's are much nicer inside, if you don't do many miles and can get a decent insurance quote, an S3 would be my choice

The Focus is a brilliant car and you'll certainly get more for your cash. The amount of gadgets in them is great. But they depreciate like a mother bitch
We cold name cars all year, you just need to get yourself to a car supermarket where there'll be loads to look at and test drive. Then run a mile and buy somewhere reputable

Owned loads of 80/90s hot hatches from mk1 xr2's to cossies but when you drive a new car you do appreciate the ride quality etc and not worrying about breaking down every 10 miles, had a couple of ep3 civic type R's aswell good value IMO fast reliable and don't cost the earth prefer them to the focus st by a mile

Sounds like you were buying the wrong ones, Fords.
My 205 GTI has not broken down on me yet. This was a time when French Cars were reliable and not full of silly Electrics.
