Quote by atwinnyIn Europe they are excellent when they have all the flare and banner displays. I love watching European football for the Ultra displays. In England people try to copy what they do in Europe but its shite.
For Liverpool we have all the big waving flags on The Kop but I wouldn't call us Ultras. Its just a way to keep the Kop unique from any other team in the league. Chelsea and other teams try to copy with their big wavers but they are paid for by the club. Me and the lads who sort it for Liverpool pay for it out of our own pocket and sort it out game by game. It might not by your cup of tea but I get a buzz out of sorting it all out to make the atmosphere at every game as good as it can be. I don't think you can beat a picture of The Kop when we have all the flags out, no other club in England comes close to what we do in my opinion (without sounding biased!!)
ha ha ha! 'I don't think you can beat a picture of The Kop when we have all the flags out'. you whoppers fucking love yourselves.
Over here it's mainly just a euphemism for lads who think they're 'better' supporters than anyone else. I think it's pretty good when done properly, but usually it's just a bunch of lads embarrassing themselves.
Quote by STEVECFCUltras ? always regarded a European thing , now suddenly we are jumping on this .. pppfffttt ..
Last i checked you guys were as much a part of europe as Denmark, Germany, France and many more :D
Just because your on an island doesnt mean your not a part of Europe hehe
VERY contentious issue there my friend!
Why is it a contentious topic? Europe is continent like North America and the british isles are a part of the continent.
Furthermore is England a part of EU so not even here you can escape.
Just find it funny how alot of englishmen don't see themselves as europeans eventhough you guys are a big part of europe both cultural, historical and racewise :)
They've done studies, you know. 60% of the time it works, every time.

If you went to Argentina and told them they were South American and the United States was in North America they'd laugh at you as there's no distinction to them, its just 'America'. I think that simple example displays how contentious such labels are because they're all politically loaded. While Britain is part of the EU I don't feel a common sense of ancestry with Italy, Poland or many other nations who are also present in what is to me an economic union first and foremost. For most of its modern history Britain has looked overseas for allies and for trade and I think that's reflected in modern British society which owes much more to the shared experience of Empire than to the continent. Similarly if you look at major events which shaped Europe many of them didn't involve Britain at all - the unification under Charlemagne, the 1848 revolutions, the development of a single currency - these factors bind the continent but exclude Britiain which as I said before has developed along a divergent path.

Not really my business this UK/European identity thread... but as far as I know, I remember Britannia was a strategic part during the Roman Empire... Didn't Romans occupied England, Wales and a large part of Scotland during... 4 centuries? To me it looks like a sort of ancestry ...
yup they did, and before them the vikings conquored (sp?) britain aswell.
Furthermore France and Germany has some more or less successfull attempts and i belive the current queen of england is a granddaughter of the late german emperor Friedrich

When the Roman's left so too did their infrastructure leading to massive resettlements across the country and the first forging of national identities (outside of scotland). In my opinion the roman mark on britain was pretty tiny especially compared to other european nations.

I wouldn't go that far, like, but a lot of hard work goes into it all and people get satisfaction out of it. The so called "12th Man" thing comes a lot from what the lads sort of a match day and helps to create an atmosphere.
Most of the ultras scene has been taken over by kids nealy.. Theres some amatuer team in scotland that has about 15 10 year old that claim to be 'ultras' rather shit. Think their names 'Poggy'... or something

There is actually a big Ultra scene in England but it is mostly in lower leagues and largely underground. York ultras Jorvic Reds are one of the most known, however, weirdly, Barrow's Ultra group... Ultras Barrovia 2008 are one of the most active in Britain aznd do large scale stuff most games and ever big game. I will upload some pictures later. Coming from a different side of terrace culture i will never be an ultra and it isnt my thing, however i respect what they have done for the club and atmosphere... Considering Barrow isnt the nicest place to come to in the first place, the ultras make it even more intimidating. I know the leaders of the group and most in it and a lot of organisation goes into it and fundraising and most risk bans ect doing it when letting off flares, smokes and other stuff but it looks great and makes it sound amazing. It is also fully adapted to English culture and everything they do relates to Barrow and its working class northern roots which is good. Most people automatically think europe and silly drums and stuff when they think ultras, its actually a good movement and important factor in terrace culture.
