I'm quite sure you've heard of 1066 and the Norman conquest? That wasn't what I'd call a "more or less successful attempt". It was what it was. A total conquest of Britain by the French which changed these isles forever.

The Normans were descended from Vikings who'd invaded France several generations earlier and assimilated themselves with the locals. So, I prefer to think of it as another Viking invasion. ; )
Quote by VictorinoxThere is actually a big Ultra scene in England but it is mostly in lower leagues and largely underground. York ultras Jorvic Reds are one of the most known, however, weirdly, Barrow's Ultra group... Ultras Barrovia 2008 are one of the most active in Britain aznd do large scale stuff most games and ever big game. I will upload some pictures later. Coming from a different side of terrace culture i will never be an ultra and it isnt my thing, however i respect what they have done for the club and atmosphere... Considering Barrow isnt the nicest place to come to in the first place, the ultras make it even more intimidating. I know the leaders of the group and most in it and a lot of organisation goes into it and fundraising and most risk bans ect doing it when letting off flares, smokes and other stuff but it looks great and makes it sound amazing. It is also fully adapted to English culture and everything they do relates to Barrow and its working class northern roots which is good. Most people automatically think europe and silly drums and stuff when they think ultras, its actually a good movement and important factor in terrace culture.
Pictures to come when i have time!
Are you from Barow mate? I have a lot of relatives there... Been a few fair times!
Right here some pictures that i found (There are more somewhere and vids on YouTube).
Best to note that Barrow AFC are a Blue Square Conf team 4 leagues away from the Prem who have an average attendance of around 1,300.
(This one was done against Fleetwood who are the rich team of the league and have a nice little sugar daddy funding them.)
Don't know if York and Oxford are active anymore but they used to do some big ones, York let off a good load of smokes at new Wembley a few years ago as well which looked good.
Victorinox out of interest do you both with premiership football at all? Looking at those pictures reminds me of some of the places I've watched Hibs when we were in Div 1 or in the cup and also a few lower league grounds I've gone to with Millwall. Being able to stand with your mates in a unique stadium always seems a bit more enjoyable to me, can see the appeal especially given the monopoly two or three clubs have over english football
Hardly ever now, for the last 3 years iv mostly attended away games with Newcastle as the travelling support still has that hardcore never give up element. When we were in championship I went to loads of away games, loads did... It was like starting again and people got that old school feeling going to smaller grounds with something about them and not just lifeless bowls. I havnt been to watch Newcastle this season home or away, mostly due to the fat twat who owns us. I love watching Barrow for that 'Grim' old school sort of reason, standing where you want, knowing loads of people, pissing against a wall into a drain (our toilets are awful). The people care loads about the club and town and it has a good reputation on and off the pitch. It's funny you mention Millwall, iv got an old newspaper cut out from The Sun in the 80's that states, "branded the Millwall of non-league football" and an article on Barrows reoccurring off the field events... But that's a different story.
Non league ; I coach at Stamford afc , the crowd do make a difference we average 200/50 for most home games and then when another team comes with a good support its great as everyone is right at the pitch side. Professional : Fuck all that Ultra shite , plastic not fantastic. NO! all we need is lyrics...... " we can see you sneaking out .." " If I had the wings of a sparrow.." arrrr all the old classics . Ultra's Fuck 'em I say. Bring back inflatable Banana's and tree's. lol. Ad.

Think all the foreign influence over here regarding the fans and the whole ultra thing is all a bit plastic and hollow. Watching Man City do that fucking silly dance when they scored with their back to the pitch the other night made me cringe. Perhaps I'm just a traditionalist, but things like that are better off suited to the Zagreb's of this world and just look out of place over here (In my humble opinion of course)
Totally agree. A spotty world of warcraft melv from Accrington doesn't quite pull the ultra thing off IMO. It's almost always geeky weirdos who are into this thing aswell.
There's gotta be a difference between terrace culture (as far it's still there) and ultra culture. Mixing doesn't make it any good, imo. Think clubs like FCUM do a great job and sticking to that heritage, imo.

FCUM have an ultras group
didn't realise that. Thought they were more of an old style group, as you get what I am saying?
Went to fc united last week with my hometown club Chorley, thought their support was poor, the flags down the side terrace of gigg lane looked good though
I like them, they add to the atmosphere which adds to the game, something much needed in todays current plight amongst the 'sit down, shut up' wankers. European Ultras got the majority of their style and background from England and places like Liverpool's kop that have been doing displays and such for years and years.... So it all originates back here in one way or another i suppose.

its a while ago now but i'm sure when poznan did that at man city the home fans were singing "what the f**king hell is that" only to then borrow it as there own.
