This has caught my eye;
Can't go wrong with Cube or Scott at that price range.
Have you got shoes, pedals, helmet etc already? if not you are going to have to factor this cost in. If you want a race style bike and you are just starting out on the road, then for £300 you could get a Triban 3 from btwin. best entry level road bike you can get as long as it's last years model with the carbon fork. Then if you don't don't really take it up you can sell it on very easily. have mates who have them and have had a thrash on one myself. Fuck the tyres off for continentals and you can use it all year round. people will turn their noses up because of price but it's better to learn on one of these than on something expensive that you will slide down the road on a couple of times.
TBH i wouldnt touch a Dawes Specialized make some good road bikes and Focus are good value for money if i was getting a mountain/hybrid bike i would go for Kona or Marin.
i was reunited with my bicycle the other day. a raleigh wayfarer, sturmey archer 3 gear from 1973 i think, battered old brooks saddle too, really pleasant looking thing and fun to ride. i picked it up off ebay for under 20 quid a few years back, quite a result! it does the job for short rides in and out of town. depending on summers finances I may do a little work on it, though its not a priority. would like a road bike but I've not got the money lying around to get one at current.
reached for the secret too soon, cried for the moon.
Would like to use it for both. The Triban 3 isn't an option as there isn't any local Decathlon stores. Was looking at the Scott Speedster 60 earlier. Going to go to town on weekend and have a look around.

I have the Scott Sportster x40 hybrid, really good bike with hydraulic brakes, bought a hybrid instead of a road bike to be able to ride on canals/ rougher ground. I did a steady 22 miles on Monday, Dolgellau to Barmouth, great path.
